Boston City Council member Chuck Turner is planning to ask a federal judge to reconsider an order that prevents him from publicly disclosing the government's evidence in his bribery case.

US Magistrate Judge Timothy Hillman issued the order at the request of prosecutors who said Turner might use the information as part of his media campaign to disrupt their corruption investigation of Turner and former state senator Dianne Wilkerson.

During a court hearing today, Turner's lawyer, Barry Wilson, said he would file a motion within a week asking for the order to be lifted. He also said he might appeal, said US Attorney's spokeswoman Christina DiIorio Sterling.

Wilson said the ruling amounts to a "gag order" that violates Turner's First Amendment right to free speech. Sterling had no comment on the case.

Turner is accused of accepting a $1,000 bribe from a local businessman. He has denied the charges.

Material from The Associated Press was used in this report.

  1. Chuck Turner has also "asked" to be treated as a victim of a racist conspiracy.

    Good luck, Chuck.

  1. When the government abuses its power it needs to be put in check. It appears that the FBI has a vindetta against Chuck Turner. The key witness has said as much.
