A disabled train in Cambridge delayed subway service this morning on the Red Line by 10 to 15 minutes, according to the MBTA.
The train broke down at Central Square Station, according to an alert posted on the MBTA's website.
Commuters kvetched about the inconvenience via Twitter, sending out short missives about transit service. The website Universal Hub has a round up of the messages here.

Recently, it seems, there has been a rise in disabled trains and signal problems. As a commuter, I encounter this now on a weekly basis. Why the increase in problems?
and this is news???????????????
What about yesterday's outbound D line delay where I stood outside in the freezing wind for 45 minutes before I could squeeze onto a train? And I subscribe to the MBTA alert system, was there an alert sent out? Nope!! I was considering taking an inbound train to catch an outbound one closer to Gov't Center....
Second day in a row with disabled red line train!
this is news? huh!
Fascinating. I only thing less trivial than Twitter itself is the incessant media coverage of it. Let's move on. Please.
The Red Line makes my life miserable! I purposely left my house early to get to work early and instead I was 20 minutes late! WHY must it break down every day??
ummm a little bit more than 20 minutes. it stranded everyone trying to get downtown in bleeping central square, the station with the tinyiest platform waiting for packed train after packed train to go by. Unbelievable. A lot of people ended up walking across the mass ave. bridge rather than wait for the #1 bus reinforcements that were deployed 20 minutes later. The MBTA is an embarrassment and more importantly an inconvenient burden that thousands have no choice but to rely on every day.
who cares?
This is surely an Onion headline. Is it really news??
I was on that train and these types of delays (10 - 15 minutes is completely inaccurate, try like 45minutes - 1 hour) have become commonplace. I'm tired of reading all of these stories about the poor commuter rail service, cutbacks in commuter rail service. GOOD! They should cut back on commuter rail service and focus on the lines that have the highest ridership. Expanding the commuter rail system was the worst thing to happen to the T causing them to get into huge debt (your welcome people driving your cars on the Big Dig) and it's spread their resources too thin. About 1/3 of the red line cars were put into service in 1969-1970, isn't it about time to replace them?
Hey Boston Globe how about some stories about the miserable service on the subway which impacts hundreds of thousands of people? Actually don't worry about it...you can just get one of Joe Pesaturo's canned quotes and post that instead.
Useless.
Twitter, meet the flying car. You two have a lot in common.
whenever it seems like there might be layoffs, or whenever there is something that the Carmen's union rank and file are upset about, there is even worse than usual service. What we are seeing are job actions. We poor folk who depend on the T are at the mercy of these corrupt patronage employees.

Charlie... Thank the Conservation Law Foundation and other environmental groups. The reason the MBTA had to do the Greenbush line was a result of concessions the Transportation department made on behalf of the Big Dig. The CLF sued and as mitigation, the MBTA had to expand. CLF figured nice new road = more cars = more pollution.. to offset that pollution, they fought for more public transportation. Expanded T + $0 = crap service.
"Shall we walk? Or do we have time to take the T?"
Qu'est ce kvetched & missives?
On most days I have to leave the house 1 hour before I start work to go 4 stops on the redline. Most of the time it takes almost 45min. Going home is even worse it's every man for themselves as you push to get into the train. What really gets to me are those that go into a crowded train with back packs take them off be consider it And what about those people that stand in the doorways and everybody is squashed near the entrance cause noone can get to the middle of the train I am not sure which is more stressful my job or trying to get to/from work. BTW I ride the Braintree line from N Quincy. I know I sound miserable but I have doing this commute for 8 years and it just gets worse each year.
I can see future Globe headlines now: Our POTUS promises trains will run again, Geithner will request greater powers over the MBTA and the heads of the MBTA won't have to pay taxes (because taxes are for the little people who aren't rich enough to make honest mistakes).
The one article you won't read in the Globe is that at the end of the year the MBTA will hand out your tax-dollar bonuses to their most imcompetent so that their valued employees won't leave.
Agreed Charlie. I'm done with all the commuter rail crap. They need to spend money on fixing what they've got and building out inner ring service.
Heather - Twitter's the hot news in this story. The Red Line being its craptastic slow self is NOT. ;)
5 out of the last 6 business days had AM delays due to disabled trains...the service is abysmal at best! I've been delayed a minimum of 30 minutes every day...
If they are trying to win Worst Transit System in America, they HAVE to be in the lead. Completely unacceptable MBTA., get your act together!
News Flash: Stop the Presses, Update the Website: Clouds covered the sun for a few moments a little while ago and more clouds are predicted. Time to update the world on twitter.
This is nothing more than a plug for Twitter.
I was on the train behind the disabled train. I'm sure the residual delays were all behind me. I have gotten off at Central or Kendall many mornings and have taken a cab into Boston, because of the delays! I think the T should reimburse my costs.
If you twitter, you're a nerd... sorry
Perhaps they are just prepping us for the coming fair hike and service cuts. Wait a minute, traditionally isn't higher cost suppose to improve service???
Hmmmmm. Why do I feel like we are getting screwed here.
In other news, the sky continues to be blue....
Once upon a time, there was a newspaper motto: "All the news that's fit to print!"
This isn't. This is nothing but a plug for Twitter.
no delays on the orange line suckers!
