Winter returns, more snow in forecast

Winter came back for another round Monday, dumping nearly 5 inches of snow on Haverhill and 1.5 inches in Boston by midafternoon, when more flurries fell.

Southwest New Hampshire accumulated the largest snowfall in the region by midafternoon, with Keene receiving between up to 6 inches.

After a springlike weekend, Monday's miserable weather is expected to extend through Wednesday, said Bill Simpson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Taunton. The outlook promises slushy commutes for Tuesday and Wednesday morning.

The temperature may hit 48 degrees later Tuesday, but wet snow is expected that night and will continue into Wednesday, Simpson said.

The sun is expected to shine on Thursday with a high temperature of 44 degrees. The forecast Friday and Saturday calls for more sun, but colder temperatures.

Earlier Monday, snow slowed traffic across the state, causing spin-outs on Interstate 290 near Worcester and the Massachusetts Turnpike.

"We don't have anything major, but there is definitely an impact," said Trooper Thomas Murphy of the State Police. "It was just messy, slushy weather for a Monday-morning commute."

  1. Gee, I don't see anything "miserable" at all about the weather. In fact, I find it rather heartening. I have learned to enjoy the snow and now rally in all four seasons. If you find it "miserable", you would be better served moving south. It leaves more for those of us who do enjoy it!

  1. That is exactly what I did Too many Bills but not everyone can afford to or can sell their house to get out at the moment so some may be legitimately sick of it. BTW: its 80 in NC right now.. At least the people running the plows are not complaining up there.

  1. Wouldn't have been so bad if the plows and sanders had made it out in time for the morning commute... maybe they were all on "spring" break? I never saw a single plow, sander, or clear section of road during my whole commute between 7:15 and 8:00 this morning.

  1. I moved here from Knoxville, TN for the four distinct seasons. It's 78 down there right now and I'll miss the spring down south. But this beats wanting to hunt down and kill the weatherman for getting yet another forecast of 2 inches of snow mixed up with two days of a cold rain. And to the last post, I grew up in Fayetteville. 80 degrees in the winter means the summer is going to be rough. Let us know how those 100 degree heat index days work out for you!

  1. I agree with Too many Bills. I love winter and relish every day we have frigid, snowy, windy, icy and other wonderful New England weather. At least for a few months, we can feel like the earth is not warming too quickly -- even though it is doing exactly that. Enjoy the winter, you'll be very sad one day if there are only a few spots left where winter will visit.

  1. Then there are those of us who enjoy experiencing, suffering, or complaining about the Winter because it makes the Spring that much more enjoyable... If everyday was Spring and Summer-like, then there wouldn't be anything special about the Spring weather.

  1. I live in NC now and love it. I re-located from Boston and would not come back on a bet. Yes, the heat might be tough in the summer, but moving from central air to car is no different than heated house to car. The heat of the summer lasts 2 months while the Boston winter lasts 6.

Actually the work out just fine. I 'd rather have 2 horrible months of heat instead of 10 months of winter. You can keep that snow. Enjoy it.

  1. Send some of it down here to PA! We had too little (to suit MY New England tastes). People here are ready for Spring. What? It's only early March. In Northern NH, where I'm originally from, Spring came somewhere between June 1 and July 1.

  1. Winter isn't returning. It's winter until March 20th.
