Two people are being treated at a hospital today after a fire broke out in their apartment in Shirley, a local fire department official said.

The three-alarm fire began just before 10:30 a.m. in the living room of an apartment at the Mohawk Village complex on Great Road, Shirley Fire Captain Joe Hawthorne said.

The occupants of the apartment, a man and woman, were both taken to UMass Medical Center in Worcester. Hawthorne said he did not know their conditions.

The fire was contained to one apartment, but eight other units received heat and smoke damage.

When firefighters arrived, the two victims and other residents were all outside the complex. The neighbors were standing around the burned victims, Hawthorne said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
