DEDHAM -- A jury swiftly rejected Ryan Bois's insanity defense and convicted him today of the rape and murder of his 6-year-old cousin after less than eight hours of deliberations. A judge then sentenced him to two life terms in prison without parole.
Bois, 22, stood stoically in Norfolk Superior Court and did not react as the jury convicted him of the majority of the 10 charges stemming from the rape and killing of Joanna Mullin of Weymouth on Aug. 5, 2007.
Judge Janet Sanders sentenced Bois after the reading of a witness impact statement from Mullin's parents, Jerome and Heather Mullin. "Ryan, we did nothing but try to help you try to get your life together because you were 'family.' There will never be an explanation that will mend the hole in our hearts," said the statement, which was read by the girl's aunt, Janet Mullin Saucedo.
Sanders commented that it was the worst case she had seen in 14 years on the bench.
Defense attorney Beverly J. Cannone had argued during the trial that her client was "tortured by demons" and was not of sound mind when he committed the crimes.
The jury convicted Bois of breaking into his grandmother's house and raping and strangling his cousin while she was at a sleepover. Prosecutors alleged that he wrapped her body in bed sheets and a quilt, stole keys to his grandmother's sport utility vehicle, and put the body in the back seat. Bois allegedly made a call on his cellphone, made arrangements to pick up drugs, and during the conversation asked how to dispose of a body.
With the body in the back seat, Bois drove the SUV between 60 and 70 m.p.h. on Washington Street in Weymouth and drew the attention of a police officer. A chase ensued and Bois reached speeds of up to 100 m.p.h., driving through red lights. He crashed into a taxi on East Howard Street in Quincy, and police arrested him after a short foot chase.
The jury convicted Bois of first-degree murder, two counts of rape, home invasion, kidnapping, larceny of a motor vehicle, larceny under $250, malicious destruction under $250, failure to stop, and negligent operation of a motor vehicle. He received the mandatory life sentence without parole for the murder and a second concurrent life sentence for one of the rape charges. Bois was acquitted of possession of a Class B substance and driving with a suspended license.

Bye Bye Bois!
again, Massachusetts doesn't have the death penalty, why?
I hope experiences the worse he can get serving life in prison.
good, this is when i wish mass. had the death penalty becasue this would be perfect justification
What a monster.
See ya later loser
nice try, freak. Good luck with your life in jail.
A monster such as this should be forced to spend the rest of his iife in a 4' X 4" cell. There is NO sentence, certainly not the death penalty, that is sufficient enough to punish creeps like this
So the tax payers will have to PAY for him to live the rest of his life in jail, while that 6 year old is GONE forever, and her family will be tormented the rest of their lives.
Please tell me MA Legislature why the Death Penalty should not be brought back to this state?
Ridiculous
A very compelling argument for the death penalty.
If ever there was a case for Mass. instating the death penalty...
I hope he rots
Of all people in the world, you hope your child is safe with family. So sad, and sick. You have to be sick and insane to do something like that, but it doesn't mean justice shouldn't be served. There is no punishment too severe for a crime like this. This guy should be thrown to lions.
Prosecutors "alledge?" He was found guilty right?
evil is as evil does. Keep this evil away from everyone a forever, please.
22 years old and his life is over. GARBAGE! Thats what he is...GARBAGE!
May he rot in JAIL!!!!!!!
I used to baby sit this dude back in the day. Wasn't a bad kid when he was younger. But turned into such a monster. Jail is in his blood, like his father and brother... Should have given him the death penalty.
MAY HE ROT IN JAIL
Well Sooze, Massachusetts doesn't have the Death Penalty because they only believe in killing unborn Babies.
They say it costs over $1mil to give someone the death penalty after the automatic appeals that are granted as well as automatic federal appeals, and it usually will drag on 10-15 years in the court systems while he's imprisoned before it mattered anyway. Though I agree this kid does not deserve to live, Mass. has enough taxes that the people can't stand adding more to put prisoners to death will just cause more upheval.
yea so that is my family. so you all can keep your comments to yourself, they are really not needed seeing as his family has to deal with this too.
Nigel, life in prison as a child rapist/murderer...a lot worse than confinement to a 4x4 cell. Even killers have codes.
i think this is better than the death pnealty because now he has to suffer in a cage for the rest of his life...id rather be dead
After he's incarcerated and the others find out what he's in for ... bye bye - from what I hear someone convicted of this type of crime is not tolerated in prison.
if you knew anything about this guy or his life growing up you would know that he was doomed from the start and that there is something seriously wrong with him; he does not need to go prison but rather bridgewater state hospital where he can get help. Those who wish for a death penalty, stop trying to act tough and do some research on what capital punishment involves, who are you to say someone decides to live or die.
prison is too good for this guy. if he could do that to his own young, sleeping cousin - imagine what he's really capable of?? lock him up & throw away the key.
Have fun Walpole, or Deadham wherever your heading you MONSTER!Glad this state is cleaning trash like this up!!!
I worked with that kid at a program called the Baird Center in Plymouth MA. run by The Home for Little Wanderers. That place did nothing for him and see what happends?? It costs $165,000 per kid per year for housing and treatment. You would think there would be some kind of results?? Nope obviously nothing. That place sucks and just fired 90% of good staff. I wonder how many more stories we are going to see that comes from this!!!

Isn't insanity such a stupid defense??? What sane person would do something like this? No sane person (by my definition) is capable of committing such a crime. Of course he's insane! Insanity should not be a defense... who cares if you are insane? It's still a crime and you still need to be taken out of society. Being able to get a lighter sentence because someone is insane is the insanity at it's best.
There is no sentence harsh enough for this crime. Sexual offenders are very rarely "cured." From many readings I understand he will surely "get his" in the prison system. So sorry for his family, unfortunately, we can't pick our relatives.
castration is better than the death penalty in cases like this.
I agree, a 4 foot by 4 inch cell is appropriate.
Justice has once again prevailed!
In cases like this where a child was involved, the prison system will take of the death penalty. He won't last long, before someone makes him pay for being a pedophile.
deathrow
"Bois was acquitted of possession of a Class D substance and driving with a suspended license." Phew, at least he wasn't drunk and had a valid driving license.
Sooze,
Mass. is full of bleeding heart liberals that are sure that it's not this guy's fault that he did this. THAT is why Mass. has no death penalty.
and to think...this scumbag will be watching TV on the $76,958 Flatscreens
His tattoos on his neck read "Death" and "After". Death after WHAT? No death penalty here.
Be aware of anyone with those tattoos.
haha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For many reasons, I am opposed to the death penalty.
It will be far more punishment for this heartless creature to spend the next 60 to 70 years locked away in a scary, very confined space with absolutely NO possibility of parole than it would be for him to suffer through the few minutes of a Commonwealth-sanctioned and Commonwealth-delivered murder.
¿Can we even begin to imagine what he now faces—not only from his own internal demons . . . but also from those many demons in the other cells there?
He is now about to enter a frightening, interminable, lonely, painful, and insanity-inducing Hades that he could not possibly have ever imagined. His horror story of a life will get only frightfully worse.
¿What will be his choice? I will not be at all surprised to learn of his suicide in prison.
¿More frightening for him, what will be the choice of the other inmates—when they learn that he has raped and murdered a very young girl? I will not be at all surprised to learn of his murder in prison.
My heart and feelings are for the family and friends of Joanna Mullin.
The death penalty seems to me to be the only answer. He'll adjust to incarceration and have some pretty good days. The cost is astronomical and should be spent on people who deserve a chance down the road. Also executing him would give the family some form of closure.
Does anyone else think that he's a candidate for capital punishment?
A little girl rapist/murderer gets life in prison. This is one of the instances when I disagree with the constitution's prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment.....
I agree with Nigel......Something like this does not just take the life of an innocent six year old girl, but also the lives of all her family members. If this were to happen to my daughter, my life would be over. He was NOT insane and knew what he was doing when he raped and murdered her. If I was given an hour alone with this person I would undoubtedly become insane after the horrible things I would do to him. I can only hope that I will never experience the human suffering which the Mullen family how has to deal with for the rest of their lives.

The large tattoos on his neck read "Death" and "After". Death after what??
No death penalty here. Hopefully karma will return to haunt him.
Beware of anyone with those tattoos.
I believe and I don't believe int he death penalty. Case in point
If the criminal is NOT caught red handed or even the slightest doubt in murder then it should not be used. such as OJ or Lacy Peterson
In a case as in this article, then the death penalty should be reinstated, and the execution should happen ASAP.
Two words.....DEATH PENALTY
He will eventually be pardoned by the liberal demoncrat governor de jour !
I am definitely not saying this man deserves to live, but as for the argument of tax payer money being spent on him in jail -- the death penalty is actually more expensive in most cases, something around 1.1million, whereas jail time is something like $800,000. Regardless, I wouldn't mind my tax money paying to get this man killed.. what a disgusting person.
We don’t have a death penalty because it is hypocritical when we say no one has a right to kill someone but we can execute (kill) the individual who commits murder.
So he's 22 years old, probably has roughly 40-50 years of life ahead of him, that the taxpayers have to pay for. Thanks liberal moonbats. I love wasting money on this type of stuff.
His family should have to bear some of the financial burden for his incarceration. The jail should be self-sustaining, in that they produce their own electricity, farm their own vegetables, no tv, no meat, no weights, you want heat, jump on a bike hooked up to a power plant to produce electricity, this is just such a collossal waste of money. For what. No reason to keep this guy alive. All life sentences should be commuted over to death sentences. If you're never getting out, why should I and other taxpayers pay to keep you alive??
Re: the death penalty in MA.
He killed her in lust or anger. Sick. Twisted. Disgusting enough to make my skin crawl. He should have justice served.
But, if you're so eager to see the man die, why don't you do it yourself? Or would that be murder? How about if a group of you got together and decided you'd do it "for us?" Where would YOU draw the line between justice and murder?
"Bois was acquitted of possession of a Class D substance and driving with a suspended license."
Why? What was the point of that?
Theres no death penalty because -as your grandma always told you- two wrongs dont make a right.
Are you working from the same ten commandments as the rest of us?
Now go back to your cornflakes.
One of the most horrifying things I have ever heard. A defenseless little girl being attacked by this piece of garbage. If this were my child I would want this guy tortured.
The thrist for blood and the desire for revenge in these comments is as ugly as his crime...
Regardless of cost, statistics and arguments about deterrance (or lack thereof), some cases simply require the death penalty. For justice.
do you really believe what we think or say matters? A child has died because this animal was allowed to live among us. Now he will have to live each and every day with the knowledge of what he has done, not only to a family member but to a small innocent child who could not defend herself against him. When he gets to prison, it will already be known what he is there for so having the death penalty really isn't a issue, because there is a thing called KARMA, he will get what his coming to him.
BostonResident and others: perhaps you didn't see the recent news story about how many states have scrapped the death penalty, or are thinking about doing so, because it costs more to execute someone than it does to keep them in prison for life.
That's not the only reaon why I oppose the death penalty, even for creeps like this. Bois is a moral coward who probably couldn't care less if he lives or dies. In fact, death would mean that he wouldn't have to face up to what he did. This way, with his age and his sentences, he knows that he will never draw a free breath. While the rest of us are out here, enjoying life, he will be spending the rest of his life being told what he may do and when he may do it. He will never drink a beer, attend a Sox game, fall in love and be able to do something about it, travel, or anything. Day after day, he will be tormented by the fact that he is "in there" while the rest of us are "out here". Even if this creep has no conscience about what he did, he well deserves the slow, painful living death that he is just beginning.
I still say you've got to be crazy to do what he did. It's not an excuse, it's a reason. He should be in a psych ward. Also the death penalty costs states millions more than life in prision because it comes with automatic appeals, which can last years. The state pays for the defense attorney and the prosecutor. Locking him up and throwing away the key is cheaper. People don't rape and murder 6-year-olds unless they have serious mental issues. I say lock him up until he's 50 and give him some therapy to help him understand why what he did is wrong.
Yeah, I'm a liberal, what of it. What if it was you're son? BTW, where are Bois' parents? What kind of life has this kid led?
I think I saw on TV about a prison out west where the prisoners are in their cells for 23 hours a day. They get one hour outside of the cell when they take a shower. But they do not come into contact with any person. Even when food is brought to them, they do not see the people. They has to be the worst. Put him there.
There are a couple of problems with the death penalty. First as has been shown in ~ 200 cases, the wrong guy is in jail and on death row.
Next the DA's will use it as a plea bargaining tool so often the guy who does the actual killing gets Life or 2nd degree while the accomplice gets the Death penalty. So again the wrong person is on death row.
What we need is like what they had on "Krypton", the Phantom Zone where criminals were sent.
My idea is that death row inmates get a small isolated cell with a cyanide pill in a little wall box.
They can them make the choice to "Check Out" whenever they want!
Now this kid here is obviously guilty and if he was sentenced to Death most ppeople would't feel sorry for this guy.
Death penalty costs more than life in prison due to the huge cost burden of the appeals process
arguments about finances aside, is it "wrong" to take the life of a deranged young man such as this, or is that more merciful than what he will undergo in jail? No punishment can help this girl's family, and I don't believe the death penalty is a deterrent-- it just seems the more "human" thing to do, at least to me. And it would seem that he deserves it. Insane or not, society should have a right to rid itself of this sort of character.
Okay. I understand why a lot of people want this evil man to die. But really executing him will only make his life easier. Leaving him in jail until he rots is a much better punishment. If this ever happened to me or any of my family. I would want this monster to rot away having all the regret in the world, knowing that they killed an innocent person. By executing him you will only end his life, he would probably never fully understand and have the regret of what he did.
Also GREG, the family should not have to share the blame, they did not watch this happen they ONLY heard about it later. The family has been tortured enough. They have to let go of a 6 year old. This man's family did not help kill the innocent child in any way . Therefore they should not have to share the blame. Only one person killed the 6 year old, only the monster.
I hope this man lives a miserable life.
M
I honestly think the death penalty is too good for him - let him live with his demons. I do believe he is mentally ill, but he needs to be locked away. Sadly, there are some people with mental illness that can't be helped, but there isn't anyplace for them to live safely until they do something terrible.
Massachusetts people are so funny. Reading the comments, it is easy to see that the Puritan roots of judgment and scorn for people who have messed up are still strong as ever. Very easy to say all of these things about death penalty when you don't know the person or the family. Equally very easy to say life in prison without any chance for parole is easy. Him being in jail has no real impact on your pockets...why? That little girl would have cost you money too if she was alive...it's called public school; plus all of his appeals while on death row will cost taxpayers tons of cash too. Believe me, he will be in protective custody for at least a year before the hard timers get wind of him and will have their shot at "chester". He's gonna wish he was dead during and after the abuse inmates will subject him to. Anyone who thinks prison is easy should do some research before mouthing off. Thank you.
The death penalty is an irrevokable punishment. If you execute someone and later determine they were innocent you can not remedy the situation. At least if an innocent man is in prison he may at some point be vindicated for a crime that he did not commit. I am not saying that this guy is innocent. However, there have been many cases in history when innocent men have been put to death. For that reason, I believe that Massachusetts is correct to have no death penalty.
I agree with Mr.Jon Melick. Though this crime is indescribely horrendous, the criminal is very young and has YEARS of living in the prison system ahead of him. He will never again be able to experience the simple pleasures that other people enjoy everyday. He did get a death sentence, a very long, slow torturous one. And that's if one of his fellow inmates doesn't decide to shorten his stay.
OMG ! Such comments. I tried to read all of them. This guy had a tough life . NO EXCUSE. I feel so very sorry for the family and friends of this beautiful girl. I hope parents can see when their kids are on this road to mahem. Some of us as parents try to help our children but do we really know what they are capable of . Death penalty I do not know. Maybe their should be some other sentence for these cases . Put them out in a barron area and make them work for the good of the people . Ex. Farming for charities , making something for the good of people.
Hey Bill,
There is a clear distinction between "killing" and "murder". Murder, is what this guy did to the child. Taking the life of an innocent human for one's own desires. That's morally wrong. Killing is different and justified. Killing is the taking of a life in war, self-defense, or as punishment such at the death penalty. Therefore the death penalty is NOT hypocritical. You just don't have your facts straight.
If somebody broke into your house and and tried to harm your family and you shot him; You would not have "committed murder" you would have killed him in self defense.
I am SO RELIEVED they did not deem him insane. Child rapists often kill their victims to cover up the crime. Thats what happened here. He isnt insane, hes just a pervert who decided it was better to kill a little girl than to face the music for raping her.
wow! this is just crazy.
first off who ever said that MA should have the death penalty. the death penalty does bring the little girl back to life. and it just makes the court a legal murderer. 2 wrongs does not make things right. you murder someone because they murdered someone else? where is the just in that?
2nd. i believe that he was convicted fairly. 2 life sentences without parole. it couldnt get any better than that. he deserves to sit in jail and think about what he did. thats more torture than killing him. but he is just a sick man.
First of all it was a class C substance cocaine fact is it was found near him not on him . The reason he was not found guilty of driving without a license is there was no proof the registry notified him of suspention small points of law that needed to be upheld all my fellow jury members went through hell for over a week they did agreat job and I'm proud of all of them
The death penalty would make sure he never got out due to some judicial loop hole and kill another innocent person.
For those screaming for the death penalty, it cost more to execute someone than to sentence to life. With all the free legal help for 10 yrs. Also if executed it's over, he'll never suffer again. 2 life sentence's he'll be in hell for the rest of his life, which IMO is better justice.
Hey Nae,
Putting this guy to death is not murder. Read number 75 about the difference between murder and killing.
why acquit him of driving with a suspended license? I hate when people do that!
This guy is a horrific monster but it is actually cheaper to keep in in jail for the rest of his life than it is to kill him via lethal injection. Plus should clinically insane sociopaths be killed? It's not like all of us want to rape 6 year old kids but don' t do it because of fear of the death penalty. He is obviously nuts. Did he choose to be nuts? Did he choose his bad genes or upbringing?
the worst thing you can be in jail is a child molester! the death penalty would
be too fast and easy...this creep will pay for what he did everyday...the prisoners will make sure of it
I'm from Ohio and I have worked with many many troubled kids in the past. As well as murderers and rapists. I have a hard time thinking that the death penalty is what this young man needs. I realize that if it was my child I probably would have killed him myself but the fact remains that his family not only has to mourn the loss of this little girl but also the loss of this young man. Regardless of how evil he is there are people in that family that still love him and care about him. The system isn't set up to deal with these types of situations and since ultimately drugs play a major role in cases like these it seems that it would definitely benefit him to about the cause and affect of the use of drugs. Sadly he will be learning this the hard way. There is no way to ever lessen the pain that this family feels and adding the emotional burden of the death penalty may be more than what they could bear right now. Give these people some peace and let them mourn in private. Say a prayer for each and every one of them and that the right decisions have been made.
back in the day these men get lynched
Bois you will have fun with your new friends BY BY !!!
This was mentioned above but bears repeating: the capital punishment is actually *more* expensive than life imprisonment. Although there are reasons to support the death penalty, cost is not one of those reasons.
Maybe someday we can have an honest debate about the relative merits of capital punishment and life imprisonment, but I guess I can't expect that from the internet.
I live in Weymouth and remember distinctly when this happened. I don't believe there was ever such a nightmarish crime! It left our town reeling! There is not one person in this family that has not been devastated by this unspeakable crime. This act has pitted family members against eachother. The loss of that beautiful child is unfathomable and the pain in the hearts of her (and his), respective immediate families must be absolutely unbearable. There are no winners here - just horrible sadness for all their days. May God give them all the strength to endure what lies ahead...
The question is, why?
-----Its sad to see so many of you stoop to animalistic revenge and thirst for blood shed. It is sociologically proven that the death penalty perpetuates and validates brutiality and violent action. If we want to encourage and cultivate a society that values the lives of human beings, we must live that example. This young man will pay for his actions tenfold, but what so many of you don't realize is that killing him will neither punish him enough, nor create a deterrant for other criminals. The only goal it will fulfill is to quench some inner desire we all have to "get even". I refuse to be reduced to this. We're better than that.----
