Police and firefighters rescued a 56-year-old woman today who fell through ice while walking on the frozen surface of Walden Pond in Concord, authorities said.

The woman, who lives in Lincoln, was able to pull herself up onto the ice after crashing through the surface, said Sergeant Brian Goldman of the Concord Police Department. Police and firefighters worked together to get her off the pond.

Authorities did not release the name of the woman, who was not injured. As a precaution, a Lincoln firefighter was taken to Emerson Hospital after being in the frigid water, according to Lincoln Fire Chief Kevin Mooney.

It appears that the woman was walking across the partially frozen pond as a shortcut.

“She was cutting across the ice and should not have been,” Mooney said.

  1. Walden Pond reportedly has among the highest levels of urine in its water ---> maybe that's why the frozen part was so prone to cracking!

  1. The main beach at Walden has disturbing amounts of urine in it.
I have heard from insiders who say to avoid the main beaches during, and after the busiest days of the summer.

  1. No one could have foreseen the ice breaking during a mild stretch of weather...

  1. I hope they send her a bill for the rescue. I am amazed at the stupid people I see on lakes and ponds when it has been above freezing for so long.

  1. If she is a local, and a "regular" year round Walden person, should have known better, pay for rescue.

  1. It's obvious this woman should not have been on the pond. I am sure this time of year the pond is understaffed by the state! It is also very obvious, in recent years that the State lets any thing go at Walden! The Pond should definitely be closed to swiming!!! Too small of a pond and area for the thousands of people who use it.
Thanks a million times for the rescue workers!!

  1. I just think it's funny this story made it to the Globe. Haha! I heard that the pond was shallow anyways. Why would she need rescuing. Make her walk out!

  1. I happen to know this woman. Her life is worth far more to all of you commenters than the cost of her rescue, and her wisdom transcends what appears to be stupidity. She would have graciously accepted her death but she lives on to help transform the world.

  1. Why do people feel the need to stand on an icy pond in the first place??? I saw a couple just standing in the middle of the pond on Sunday when the temps were already warming up.

  1. Seriously, I'd like to know why on earth people have to give their 2 cents worth. I am doubly shocked by the icy cold comments from others here. Sure what she did was stupid, but aren't we all prone to making a mistake or two in our lives? All I could think of while reading this was, God do not let me fall into the hands of such judgmental people! She made a mistake, now let her pay for it, as we all must, but leave the stupid comments to yourselves and be thankful that YOU aren't caught doing something so stupid. This is my first time blogging and will surely be my last. I really don't want to be reading stupid comments about stupid things that have happened. Isn't it enough that it happened? AND.. look how much time was wasted by reading these stupid blogs and then responding to them. I'M OUTTA HERE!

  1. Everybody's life is more valuable than the expense of the rescue but you also have to be responsible for your actions, stupid or not. She should be billed for the rescue.

People read these comments because they are usually more interesting than the story itself.
