WTKK-FM suspends Severin for derogatory comments about Mexicans

I've always hated this guy.

Gotta get these fear mongering hatred filled idiots off the airwaves. They are a pollution to humanity and do nothing to move the world forward.

If these comments were made on the air, wouldn't the GLobe be able to research and find out what the comments were? At any rate, he is just vile and glad he is not spreading his hate onthe air.

Personally I am glad that he is suspended. His show is nothing but deragatory comments about either women or race. One less person like Jay Severin on the radio is a good move. Now we should think about his counterpart Michael Graham who is just as bad. I think these two should have their own "man" show becuase they are both so full of themselves and very politically negative that maybe a show just about them would be best for their careers.

I don't know what he said but even without hearing it I'm 99.9% sure it was derogatory but that still doesn't mean he should be suspended. Vote with your dial if you don't like it and listen to something else.

Severin speaks the truth! I guess the liberals panicked that the truth would be revealed! Or more likely, some people were offended by the truth spoken by Severin. I'm sorry but sometimes the truth hurts and no one should be made to lie just to make people feel better about themselves. I couldn't be more pleased. I listen to Jay on occasion and he continuously reminds me who has the show that should be called the "Nose Pin Zone". You can always tell a righty talking head too as the one who resorts to making fun of people's physical descriptions when the argument starts to fall apart (Limbaugh, Ingram, and Coulter are other examples). As far as I'm concerned, this little Nazi rat can stay off the air forever.

How can anyone comment intelligently if the article doesn't report what Severin said. Censorship - even of radio talk show hosts - is a slippery slope. There probably are many talk show hosts and callers expressing the same idea as Severin but in a different way, so is the punishment for the opinion or the way it is expressed?

Radio talk show hosts are paid to be "fiery". I don't listen to Jay, but I think he should be able to say anything he wants, as long as it doesn't incite people to violence.

When enough people are offended, they do vote with their dial. That's probably what happened in this case, which causes the radio station to fear the loss of ad revenue. He has the right to free speech and the station has the right to fire him. Hopefully, the community will react the same way to get michelle mcphee and other haters off the radio. Let them spew their hate from a street corner like any other crazy person.

I've always enjoyed his show, but he has been becoming morse terse and negative. He dances a fine line at times, and at times crosses it. He says things that many of us think, but don't dare to say, and i'll give him credit for that. But there is a line ( I missed these particular comments), and if he crossed it he should face the consequences. He's intelligent, it's too bad he can't be a more positive influence.

yesterday afternoon I did hear him something like, "the only things mexico exports are criminals and women with moustaches". i am not easily offended, but I thought that was completely over the line - not to mention juvenile. i shut him off after that comment, so I don't know what if anything else he said.

Nobody should be allowed to say anything that could possibly offend anyone. Abolish the first amendment. So what if I never listen to the radio and could easily change the channel if I didn't like what someone is saying. Get rid of them all! All I can say is it is about time.

While I don't always agree with Jay, I find him regularly at least intelligent enough to form a strong argument, which is a welcome change from some of the other boob conservative commentators (Rush, Howie, Jerry Callahan, Michael Graham) on the Boston airwaves. Jay I at least will listen to for a short while before deciding whether to turn the channel; the other guys I simply turn off as soon as I hear their voices.

Jay does 'shock talk' for sure, and DOES try to push the envelope as far as he can, but I don't think he deserves to be suspended while the others I mentioned, who veil racism and homophobia under 'political discourse' are allowed to continue. But it just shows that WTKK is the more upstanding station, in taking this action.

But Heidi, if Jay merits a suspension, Graham merits firing. But then again, nobody is listening at that hour anyway.

And yet the shame of it all is that when he wants, Jay can be insightful, informative and thought-provoking. The sad part is that it's only about 10% of the time. I love the way the Globe is so transparent in it's bias. The lowly local radio talkshow host gets front and center above the fold front page coverage, yet the BOSTON tea party got near zero coverage buried deep in the paper via an AP story out of Kentucky. Nice job Globe /sarcasm off.

"The best and the brightest" do not have to label themselves (as Severin does); people who state such about themselves most likely are not even close. Furthermore, anyone who thinks, "it's just wrong," or "that's just the way it is," are valid arguments is sorely undereducated. I cannot count the number of times I have heard Severin spout blatant untruths on the radio, and I very rarely listen to his show - that's how filled with misinformation he is. I do not care what what he said as long as it did not break any FCC regulations, then he should not loose his job. The station can give him a few days off to, so they can appease the group who is complaining as long as they have a legitimate complaint. Severin was bad-mouthing Imus yesterday on his show like a gossipy little school girl, saying he "knew something" about Imus but "couldn't say anything about it." When Imus was in town for St. Patrick's Day, the I-Man proved once and for all that Rat Face Severin can dish it out but can't take it. While on stage in front of a live audience of hundreds of people, Imus jokingly said that he was going to shoot Severin. It was a JOKE, but it still got Jay's panties in a bunch and they have apparently stayed that way. I wonder if Imus cashed in his chips and made this punk go down once and for all? Later, Rat Face!

I do cringe when Jay makes general comments about race, religion or women. However his views certainly balance out the vast population of liberal elite in MA. I come from a largely Mexican background and I could care less what he said. His views have no bearing on my life. I agree that listeners should "voice" their displeasure by changing the station. The radio station he made his comments on has a responsibility to garner the largest possible listening audience for its advertisers. If they feel this can only be accomplished by suspending him, then this is well within their right. Maybe enough people called in and changed the station, compelling the owners to act. If that's the case, the system worked.

I was listening to the show when he was speaking about Mexicans. His comments were no different than what you would hear from other shock jocks in the Howard Stern veign.

If people assume what he says is based in truth, they are idiots. What he says is done to draw attention to the show. It is all done for ratings.

I am a political moderate. Although I tend to lean a hair to the left, I like to hear all sides and make up my own mind. I have tried to listen to Severin over the years, but have generally found it too painful to listen to him for very long. Just at a point when he may be making an interesting observation, he crosses the line and starts ranting about the size of Hillary's butt, or Asian women, or fat people, or some other immature, silly blather. I can't change the station quickly enough. He's ridiculous, angry, full of himself, and quite often hateful. I didn't hear what he said and can't comment on whether he deserved to be suspended.

I don't listen to his show often, as I prefer the more local angle Carr provides, but I'm almost certain he should not be suspended. A full story would help. The Globe also is doing half it's job here as someone else points out. I'm sure a major newspaper could find out the comments rather than printing a general story like this. Bottom line is that we have free speech in this country, which includes the freedom to offend people. People are free to change the dial if they don't like what's being said and the people tuned into his show know what they're going to get. Stop whining about how mean and derogatory he is. If enough people changed the station, they'd take him off for a legit reason (loss of advertising revenue) rather than this BS.

I heard Jay's comments about mexicans. One was something like, " I never understood why college students go to Mexico for spring break, as opposed to Florida. It's dirty, and there's Mexicans there." When I heard that I thought it was a bit over the top. I mean, Jay really doesn't like the situation with illegal border crossings on the Mexican border, and I agree with him about how illegal immigration is a big problem. But I don't think that illegal immigrant Mexicans are good representation of law abiding Mexicans living in Mexico. I'm sure they are mostly good people. But I also think being suspended might be too harsh a punishment. I mean, it wasn't the wisest and nicest thing to say, but being suspended might be a bit extreme.

Well, I'm not sure what the Fifth Amendment has to do with free speech, as some legal scholar posted above, but I'm not sure that Severin would protected under the First Amendment because he works for a private company, and they own their broadcast signal, so the company can dictate what can or cannot be said, just as most other private employers dictate to their employees. Obviously, the radio station is dependent upon ad revenue, and if advertisers are concerned about upsetting a large portion of consumers, i.e., Mexican-Americans or Hispanics in general, then yes, I can see the radio station making a business decision and suspending Serverin. Isn't it unfortunate that in this day and age, the focus of discussion on the radio isn't between two opposing sides presenting intelligent, reasoned arguments about why a liberal, conservative or centrist/moderate position on any issue is of value, that instead we focus on the batherings of extremists like Severin, Limbaugh, Franken (before his run for the US Senate) and other ratings whores? Why, exactly, does anyone listen to ANY extremist blowhards, thus giving them political legitimacy? Why haven't we, as a nation, matured enough to ignore narrow-minded bigots of the airwaves of both sides?

Very few of the people I work with or know as friends, colleagues or family fall into any extreme political category and, if that is representative of society as a whole, then why is anyone listening to right and left-wing nut jobs? Rather than enable their juvenile rants by tuning in to them, just tune them out.

While the editorial side of most NPR programming may trend liberal, at least NPR political talk show hosts make the effort to present all sides of political discussions and generally refrain from engaging in personal political polemics. While it may not be as "exciting" as listening to a Limbaugh insult-fest, it is more informative and, quite frankly, more valuable as a means to gain more in-depth understanding of two or more sides of an issue. Additionally, by not listening to Serverin and his ilk, you don't have to listen to those annoying radio ads that are used to pay their inflated salaries. Let Severin be as childish and insulting as he wants, but let him do so alone, without contributing to his bile OR his salary. Take the adult path and let him and his kind "talk" off into the sunset.

There is no worth or content to his show. I listened for about two days before all of the provocation had lost its luster. Last time I was listening (a few weeks ago) Jay took a caller who, gasp, didn't agree with him. The conversation was painful as the caller tried valiantly to get his point across in between Jay's rants. Call ended, as usual, with Jay hanging up on the caller, berating him, and then to finish things off, calling him "homo boy." No reference to sexuality was made in the call whatsoever so this was clearly straight from Jay's bigoted brain. Clearly Jay does have issues.

The comments quoted that got Severin suspended are no different than the sort of remarks he has been making for years, even using the exact phrase "crimalien".

The show promotes thinking be it agreement, disagreement, or a search for thought. The fact that so many people get upset about what another said, that they in fact don't even personally know, is sad. Listen, form some thoughts, and move on. I've been listening to Jay for nearly a decade and I have found him to be educational and entertaining. I really like him, which is weird because I never was one to like talk radio. I don't really understand all the ad hominem arguments against this guy; he's pompous, he lies, who cares..... he is entertaining. I also really enjoy the Daily Show and the Colbert Report, which have a national audience and a liberal agenda. They bad mouth and insult people all the time; I hope they aren't next to get the axe. The extreme opinions should be heard. WTKK has every right to do whatever they want, even if it effects the bottom line. As for me, I am going to give XM a try.

In addition to being entertaining, Jay is very intelligent, understands the issues fully and is an excellent debater. When the occasional caller raises an isssue that is contrary to his position - and can back up their position with facts, he listens with an open mind. Sadly these calls are quite rare.

I'm a Latino immigrant. I love to listen to Jay to remind myself that so many people dislike me and my people. Part of it is ignorance -- how do they knowwho's legal and who's not? 'cause they look "Mexican"? It's just hatred against immigration. But freedom of expression is a fundamental right.

First, I must say that I was a long time listener to Jay, but about six months ago, I decided to stop listening because I had grown tired of his incessant ranting and derogatory remarks. That said, I will also admit that if you can sift through all of his sleaziness, he does offer some good political insight. I just simply didn't like the manner by which he chose to operate. My point is, I didn't enjoy him anymore, so I MADE THE DECISION TO STOP LISTENING.

Why now? Jay has been saying these kinds of things for years and years, without being suspended. In fact, "Criminaliens" was a term and a discussion topic on his show countless times (especially surrounding his criticism of John McCain's stance on immigration). However, only now, in our brave new "OBAMERICA", is he getting pulled off the air. The Fairness Doctrine is coming back, people, whether we like it or not. Now, I certainly don't endorse Severin, but I do believe firmly in a free market. If people don't like what they hear, they should tune him out, let his ratings drop, and the sponsers will leave. Let the market put him out of business.

With publicity like this and comments like these, negative and positive, Jay just got a potential ratings boost. Why on earth would they dumb him now. This is exactly what he needed. His ratings have been in decline. It's talk radio, not boring, low rated NPR or leftie radio. The ratings come from those who love him and those that hate him. The reason liberal hosts don't work is because they are boring and those that hate them do not listen to them. And in most cases, even those who agree with their politics don't listen either...why?.... because they are not entertaining. That's just a fact of talk radio life my friends.

I was hoping Jay and his whiny voice would be banned from WTKK for good. Unfortunately, that's the only talk station I can get at work. Although Jay is often on the right track, he tends to derail too often. He appears to have an ego problem, to put it mildly. I much prefer Michael Graham, who often fills in.

I turned on the radio to see who was filling in today and was disappointed to hear Curtis Sliwa, who sounds like Leo Gorcey of the Bowery Boys with his slang and slaughtering of the English language.

If Graham can't fill in the 3-7 PM time slot, I'd prefer Dennis Miller, Laura Ingraham, or Mark Steyn. They all get it and are very humorous at times. I also like Mark Levin. He's a smart guy (with the #1 book on Amazon's list) who tells it like it is (or should be) even though he can be a bit harsh at times when driving home a point. I share his frustration. This country is in serious trouble because we've strayed too far from the US Constitution. Government has become much too large and much too intrusive in the wrong ways. We need to realize how serious this matter is. This is no longer the America our forefathers envisioned - not by a long shot!

He's a very articulate guy, but if you actually analyze his arguments the logic falls apart at least half the time. 99% of his callers agree with him, and on the rare occasions when some poor schmuck gets through and tries to counter him, he devolves into insults and cuts the person off. While I believe his comments are derogatory and wrong, I have listened to his show and he is at least addressing many important issues that you don't even see in our papers or on the news. I actually listen to the show occasionally despite the fact that I disagree with a lot of, if not MOST of what he says. He has made some comments about women that seriously offend me. As a teacher I have watched illegal aliens taking advantage of our free education including all the extra we spend on them because they are a "special population" (they don't speak English). This is between Jay and WTKK. His first amendment rights are completely intact. As stated by others, the first amendment only covers government censorship. No private entity is required to provide him a platform and nobody's stopping him from going on a street corner and preaching anything he wants. But just like I can't say whatever I want at my place of employment, he finally reached a threshold his employers couldn't tolerate and they are totally within their rights to discipline him. He serves at their pleasure. I heard his comments yesterday, found them repugnant, and exercised my own right to switch him off.

Unless you're an American Indian you or your ancestors are immigrants so whatever brand of xenophobia you prefer you had better apply it to yourself and your family. Talk show hosts like this guy are a joke, whatever they spout is garbage. However, in America free speech is a right, the only issue here is he was suspended by management. It's their choice to protect their advertising and revenue stream. It's our choice as listeners and consumers to listen to his drivel or change the station. I choose not to listen, too many other important issues in life to deal with than this idiot's suspension.

Severin has been using the term "Crimalien" for at least 7 years now. He's always been proud of the fact that his station stands by him no matter what he says. I don't know, maybe some gutless namby-pamby liberal took over the reigns at WTKK and canned him. The station management decided that he's done enough rabble-rousing for the time being, which is their right, as it was the right of ClearChannel to shut down its left-leaning stations and replace them with other programming, in Boston with Spanish music stations, and just as WBZ tried to replace Steve LaVeille with out-of-state drek and replaced Lovell Dyett with an unsuccessful syndicated computer program and now with a syndicated garden program.

Perhaps, and I hope, WTKK management has realized that steady doses of demagoguery from twisted talk show hosts have caused a number of mentally unbalanced listeners to commit multiple murders that target people of specific ethnicities and police officers. Michael Graham, for example, whose only work experience consists of trying to be a comedian and of succeeding at being a race-baiter, was fired from the right-wing Washington station that carried him for attempting to foment violence against Hispanics. Severin's bios make no mention of any "real job" before becoming a Republican "consultant." However, his reward for stirring up the passions of the lemmings, whom he snickeringly refers to as "the best and the brightest," is a 17 room house with eight bedrooms and 5 1/2 baths, is on nearly 5 1/2 acres in Manchester by the Sea.

This is not a free speech issue -- Mr. Severin does not have a constitutional right to a radio show. He works for someone else. If he wishes to exercise his protected right to speak, he should buy his own radio station.

I like to listen to talk radio to learn things and part of my daily routine had always been with Wtkk. But for the past year, I find myself switching the station because I find the ranting between Jay and Michael Graham empty and at times down right aggrevating. They call their audience the best and brightest, but they don't deliver the same. When I found myself yearning for Jay to bring on interesting people to discuss interesting topics and he doesn't...I knew it was time to tune out and find someone else. I am one of the best and brightest and now I listen to NPR and BBC (when I can get it.) They deliver interesting, informative, and real political commentary.

Why don't he move to Australia?

Getting canned from a PRIVATE radio station for being derogatory is NOT a violation of free speech. It's not as if Jay Severin has been put in jail for speaking his mind, which WOULD be a violation of free speech. His radio show is a COMMERCIAL enterprise. Clearly he is turning off advertisers. Hey everybody, this is America remember? We're commited to defending free speech even when we don't like it. Remember "I disagree with what you say but I will defend to death your right to say it"? Apparently that no longer has meaning to many of you here.

I stopped listening to WTKK at pm drivetime long ago. When Mr. Severin started harping on working mom's.. that was it. My husband works from home to take care of our kids ( now teenagers) and he said that dads that work from home are losers, and no subsitute for a mom at home.... ( I called the show, and he was pretty rude) I was all done with him.
He gets personal, and has nothing intelligent to offer in the way of arguement. He used to be more moderate. But now he sounds like an east coast Rush. Who needs him.

I hate this guy. I disagree with everything he says. Anyone who listens to him or defends him is racist, sexist and homophobic and has no right to post on this forum or publish their hateful beliefs anywhere. Free speech has brought this country and this world nothing but misery. I'm sure that our founding fathers did not mean it literally. This guy needs to be locked in a diversity class for 6 months until he stops thinking the way he does.

The guy picks on ILLEGAL immigrants NOT immigrants. I have yet to read a story that say that. Illegal immigrants are a HUGE burden on our society, anyone who does not see that is blind. I'm not a big fan of Jay's, I like Howie, but suspend him because he speaks a painful truth....come'on.

I don't understand those who are mad about this dude's suspension--you don't think his employer should have its guaranteed freedom of the press? (no one is saying, by the way, that he can't say anything. this is a freedom of the press issue.) i guess if i were an incompetent white guy who relies everyday on white supremacey to keep me out of the underclass then i too would feel entitled to have broadcasters give up their rights for my benefit. everyhting else in the world has been arranged in such a way for the benefit of illiterate, uneducated, ignorant little rednecks.

Even if you believe Jay was slurring an ethnic group (in fact he was not) what are you afraid of? Offensive and even vile speech is not illegal--if if were they would have to shut donw P-Town.

In this country, my understanding is, we allow free speech.
I don't always agree with Jay, but in my mind it is wrong for people to want to silence him. If you don't agree with him, don't listen, or do listen and call him and try to debate and draw him out.
If your political leaning differ from his, find a show that suits you, and support it.
We CAN all get along.

It takes real responsibilities to open your mouth on the airwaves . Freedom of speech isnt for everyone, lets make that clear, a man should be as good as his words. . Too many americans on the radio and tv open their mouth to something awful and spreading the brain disease that's is called stupidity and spreading it culture across the globe. Don't even start with the illegal immigrant rhetoric, you could easily be associated with the ethnic cleansing your ancestors did to the natives, read up on that and swallow some guilt before you open your mouth on the air. Its pretty much a joke when Americans go to the polls to vote for a half kenyan, but this guy was a Republican consultant? Maybe he doesn't appreciate that his job is to sit and talk. As an american that he represent, does he have a clue what his country is doing to the world financially?

His advertisers are paying for his "free speech" so he doesn't have any so called "free speech". If he wants "free speech" then he should fund his own show. Otherwise he works for someone else and they can call the shots. Good riddance !

Freedom of speech is dead. Say what the liberals want you to say, or don't say anything at all. Many people are offended by many different things. I am personally offended by the homosexual lifestyle, but I will still allow them to have their fair say. That is, they should have the right to try to convince me that homosexuality is okay. I just don't understand why it is such a crime to offend people these days. When did it become a crime to offend? People will be offended by things no matter what. We cannot prevent it.

487 posts in 3 hours 32 minutes. Who else in Boston could get suspended and cause such a stream of exchanges. (Not anyone working for the Globe) He certainly has a large audience that seems to include people from all points of view. And he certainly sparked so many discussions off air from which we all benefitted (I know I did).

But, somehow his time has passed. "We the people" should not be distracted by alternate points of view in this time of "Crisis". We are one people now with one leader. He will show us the way. He will guide our lives from cradle to grave...just vote blue and fall in behind Him.

Were Jay's comments offensive...yes.
Should he apologize...yes.
Should you turn the dial and allow others the freedom to choose for themselves...yes

Can you point to one incedent of violence or vandalism caused by Jay Severin?
Do you fear that he will cause riots and unrest?
Or, do you fear that he will turn others from your point of view?

Say what you will about George Bush (and I have said it too).
But George Bush never acted to silence citizens who disagreed or even mocked him. We used to be free to express our disaproval of public figures.
Saturday Night Live used to make fun of the President (and don't tell me there is nothing funny about this new President. Wow, you're missing out!)
Bush may very well be the worst public speaker to ever live on this earth but he respected the Bill of Rights. And that makes him a better American than...

It seemed like Severin was trying to copy the vile Michael Savage- in preaching raw hatred and bigotry as a way to drum up bottom feeder right wing listeners.
Severin's show lacked any intellectual value or purpose- it was simply Severin voicing his hatred of gays, Muslims, Latinos, women, etc, and his feeling that EVERYONE should hate these same groups of people.
He offered pure hate, and his callers voiced their own bigotries as well.
He's a vile , hatefull man, and I hope he will not return to the Boston radio airwaves

Severin didn't say anything we don't see and hear everyday. Anyone can see the newspapers and ACLU etc; are soft and liberal. You don't like what he says on his radio show? listen to soft rock or another station.
