After airport arrest, driver apparently trolled Craigslist for witnesses

April 1, 2009 02:47 PM Email| Comments (99)| Text size +

By Andrew Ryan, Globe Staff

The posting on Craigslist by a user named "Matron" appeared at 3:59 a.m. on Monday, just hours after a high-powered Wellesley portfolio manager had been released from police custody following an explosive parking altercation with a state trooper at Logan International Airport.

Margaret-Greer1.jpg

Margaret M. Greer

Matron described herself as "a middle aged lady driving a silver van" and explained that she had, "an altercation with a Mass State Cop outside terminal B around 8:15 pm.

"I am seeking witnesses who were there and saw the State Trooper bang on my car and try to get through my door," Matron wrote in a posting that was deleted this afternoon following this story's publication on Boston.com. "Several State Police cruisers pursued me and arrested me on the Mass Pike. Please help me, if you saw this event."

The description nearly matches the arrest Sunday night of the portfolio manager, Margaret M. Greer, who is accused of hitting a trooper with her side mirror, driving at him so he had to run backward for 15 feet, and dragging him for a short distance as she drove away. The one exception: Greer's "silver van" was a silver Mercedes Benz ML320 sport utility vehicle.

There is no definitive evidence that Greer used the alias Matron and trolled Craigslist for witnesses who saw her dispute with the trooper. Greer did not respond to a message yesterday seeking comment. Her attorney, Carol Ann Starkey, declined to discuss or confirm "anything about any discussion that occurred on the Internet."

"Mrs. Greer is taking these allegations very seriously," Starkey said. "But that doesn't mean we don't have our own side of the story. It doesn't mean that we don't strongly refute what the government's recitation of the facts has been to date. We are going to let our facts unroll in a courtroom, not in the court of public opinion."

Authorities confirmed that they are scrutinizing the Craigslist posting and the string of responses that followed.

"Prosecutors are aware of the postings and are examining them for any potential connection to our Logan Airport case," said Jake Wark, a spokesman for the Suffolk District Attorney's office.

If Greer did post the solicitation on Craigslist, she did not uncover any witnesses -- or sympathy -- in cyberspace.

"You fled the police?" wrote a user with the name "justanotherpost." "I am sorry but just by what you have written here, I would suggest you give up looking for 'witnesses' to bolster some kind of entitlement you seem to think you have, and, instead, cooperate with the police as much as possible to straighten the mess you have gotten yourself into."

A poster named "golf22" chimed in: "I'm sure the District Attorney appreciates your help in rounding up witnesses to testify against you as to the several illegal actions you took."

And Mr_Twister added: "We'll all be 'VERY' happy when the judge throws the book at you."

Matron defended herself, saying she was "blocked in by a bus on one side, and cars parked in front of me, and behind." The chase on the turnpike "was slow speed, and required five state cruisers," Matron wrote, "I was freaked out and traveling at 50."

When the posters turned nasty -- and one recognized the story from the news -- Matron sharpened her rhetoric.

"Wake up people, you are being controlled by a government who thinks they can do anything … When has it become a crime to pull up to the curb to pick up your husband at the airport? Oh, in a bus lane?" she wrote. "I am very disappointed at the antipathy I have received from this forum. I thought the craigslist community was more empathetic and dedicated to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

A lecture followed.

"Why did the State Police come after me?" Matron wrote. "Because it's so easy! The same reason that the IRS audits every pizza parlor owner in town, but never audits Enron Corporation. The same reason the SEC audits all those you know who are registered brokers, but never audited Bernie Madoff. Why do the police logs in your town fill up with teenagers and immigrants? Because it's easy for the cops to pick on these helpless people, and so much more difficult for them to go after the really hard criminals. I am distressed that you cannot see this. Please do not think you are holier than me, because you are not.

"When it happens to you, I hope I can be there to support you."

  1. Reference this morning's Globe story quoting officers (not the one at the airport) who reported "Matron" had an OPEN CONTAINER in the Mercedes and her breath smelled of ALCOHOL. She must have snorted a few later on whilst on craigslist too.
    Too rich!

  1. They say she had alcohol on her breath and a cup of booze in the car. She was probably drunk-posting, LOL!!!

  1. well said "Matron" the police have been militarized and we are living in an encroaching police state. And the Globe and the controlled establishment media smear and attack anyone who fights the NWO.

How many Americans know the Federal Reserve System (our "money") is a privately run banking institution that ISN'T part of the U.S. government and it is 70% owned by foreign banks?

  1. did she mention anything in her 4AM post about having "alcohol on her breath" or an open container as the Trooper's report states? did she mention whether she picked up her husband before she took off on the PIke or left him at Logan?

i'm sick and tired of these elitest, privileged, haughty scumbags not having to play by the rules just like everyone else. for the first time in your life, when you screw up: TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS

  1. I'd go as far to say that the State Police ask everyone parked in a bus lane to move to the cell phone lot when picking up arriving guest at the airport. I highly doubt they are *waiting* for specific individuals to *target*.

Follow the rules like the rest of us and you would have gone home and had a nice dinner with your husband.

  1. To "Matron" -- Sweetie, since 9/11, nobody at any airport in any city or town has been able to pull up at a curb, park and wait for ANYONE and your husband is no exception! You DO remember 9/11, do you not?? You need to wake up and stop looking for people to lie for you! Face it, you were wrong. Did you actually think you could get away with running over a state policeman?? Deal with it - you blew it big time!

  1. Sounds like someone thinks they are entitled to do whatever they want...

Yesterday I saw a lady (I'll try not to stereotype but I'd say she was 'retired') who didn't think she had to take the time to find a parking spot like the rest of us, and instead parked blocking a fire hydrant... what makes it worse is that she obviously didn't have the time to actually park either, so she stopped in the middle of the street, adjascent to the space open by the fire hydrant, while she went into the bank.

Honestly some people think and act like they are the only people in the world that matter. I don't like it as much as anyone else but we have to share this space we were given to live on. Those who think they are above the rest of us trying to get to and from work or do our errands deserve whatever is coming to them. Their parents would NOT be proud.

  1. I've seen the troopers at the airport. They have no over sight and they forget who pays their salary. They make situations dangerous with the buses zipping in and out. If it is true he banged on her vehicle she has every right to sue the State and the State Police. I would render judgement against the state in any lawsuit against the State Police at the airport. They need to be put in their place.

  1. She is right and wrong. The cops at the airport think are real jerks. Are they potecting Bush in Iraq? But unfortunatley, you have to obey them. HOWEVER, somehting should be done about their demeanor. I've been there super-early, parked safe and out of the way and they turn the lights on you and give you that "tough-guy" look. Like I'm any kind of a threat to them? Is this attitude necessary?

Society as a whole are sick and tired of people like you. You and your lame attorney, who will no doubt twist the facts to get you off suck. 1. Its Justice.
A woman backed her car into me while I was standing in the crosswalk but I was ok, just a bump. A Logan State Trooper came over to me and thinking he was going to ask if I'm ok, I said "i'm Ok." He instead said "you kicked her car," which I had not. The officer kept pressing me like I was suddenly going to admit the act then threatened to arrest me on disorderly conduct (as i was furious and having a hard time remaining calm). Even when eye witnesses told the officer I did not kick the woman's car, he still would not back down.
To the staties at logan, keep it up. What goes around comes around. Don't let them get the best of you Margret.

  1. Listen to all of the 'holier than thou' respondents out there......I'm sure if it were you in the hot-seat you'd want everyone else to remember that you were "innocent until PROVEN guilty". Give this poor woman a break.....unless you think you would have reacted dramatically different in this situation. The police, after all, have been known on occasion (as some of you may or may not know) to be a little hazy on the truth, especially when it's in their best interest to do so.

  1. Lady, get used to respecting the State Troopers. If anything happens at Logan in terms of security issues, we'll all want the MSP to respond quickly. People who do not move when directed could be a possible diversionary device for some other more serious matter. These guys need our respect and cooperation. LATER, if you are wronged, tell the judge or a supervisor that you had a problem, but at the moment, please do what you are told. When someone is willing to put his life on the line for me, I'm going to respect him/her and ask questions in a calmer time. And yes, I'd like to be able to wait to pick up my friends as well, but I will move when told.

  1. I agree with her last comment in this article, but I would add another class of people that are easy targets for policemen: people who challenge the cop's authority, instead of being submissive. Often the cop is a rude bully subconsciously looking for someone naive, drunk, or full of themselves to disrespect the cop, so that they can then exert their authority. Im guessing the cop was a jerk and that Ms. Greer is full of herself and was a jerk back. She loses that contest everytime

  1. I am a police officer and I give this Trooper alot of credit for not discharging or even drawing his weapon. This woman clearly had no regard for this Troopers saftey or well being. The problem is that she is going to walk on some misdemeanor asault charge. In my book this is attempted murder or at the very least asault with a deadly weapon along with many motor vehicle violations. The Trooper invloved should be aplauded for keeping his cool and keeping public saftey in mind by not drawing his weapon during a potentially deady situation.

  1. There are signs at the airport saying you can not park in front of the terminal. If you weren't gonna move, then that leads to suspicion and could result in deadly force, especially at an airport. And for you not to realize that 5 cops were behind you trying to pull you over is just stupid. How dumb can you be to not follow a simple law of, pull over! when a cop is behind you. Wow, the general public just gets dumber and dumber every day. Common sense people.... Oh and the cops dont pick on teens and immigrants, its themselves who are dumb enough to get themselves in whatever situation they bring.

  1. This lady has lost it. Trolling for help online. All she had to do was move her car when the officer asked her to and there would have been no incedent. It is a simple law that no curbside parking is allowed at Logan. You can't sit in your car and wait for your pick up to come to the curb. You pull up, they get in and you leave. It really isn't that hard. She has the "I'm better than everyone else and the law so I can do what I want" attitude. Te judge needs to make her pay for her immature actions and make her pick up trash at the airport pick up/drop offs and watch how people pick people up at the airport properly.

So many cops just abuse the law abiding passive citizen, but look the other way when something big is going down. Five state police cruisers to pull over an ordinary middle aged woman non-criminal? What a joke!

    1. Post videos on YouTube, showing re-enactments of the incidents.
    2. Send letters to local newspapers, Globe, Herald, Wellesley Wingnut etc.
    3. Post comments on Boston.com, to ensure maximum exposure.

In my experience, I've yet to be politely or calmly asked to move by police at the airport, be they staties, or any other agency. If I had the time, I'd go to the trial to hear what both sides say.

  1. This weekend I saw a lady park her car in the MIDDLE OF THE ROAD because she was too important to spend time looking for a spot and walking to the bank. There was an open space right in front of the bank but there was a hydrant there. Not only did she decide she was going to block the hydrant, she also decided her time was too important to waste parallel parking. I couldn't believe it really, right on Washington St. in Brookline, around 11 A.M., and less than a block from the police station., there is a car parked in the middle of the road, essentially double parking an open space in front of a hydrant,.

The point of the story is that the world today is full of people who feel like they are entitled to do whatever they darn well please. We've done it to ourselves really by raising our kids to feel nothing but victory and success, to the point where eventually society feels as though they should never have to feel disappointment, that they can have everything their way when they want it.

Listen up people, we all have to share this earth. The space that makes up my commute to work is shared by thousands of people, and each one of them has a life that is just as important to them as mine is to me. WAKE UP. Look around when you're walking on the sidewalk, don't stand in the doors on the T so OTHER PEOPLE can use the train too, don't park in handicap spots if you aren't handicapped. They may seem like small things but they make EVERYONE'S life alot more enjoyable.

This lady's actions are pathetic but we all know there are plenty of other people out there who feel just as entitled and don't hesitate to put their wants and needs ahead of someone who may already be waiting in line.

  1. well... I think she's done a stupid thing. And she won't get too much sympathy in her Mercedes SUV, these days (which she obviously recognizes herself, hence the "silver van" in the craigslist posting!)
BUT I have seen the Staties do some really stupid things at Logan too, and elsewhere. Common sense is often in short supply (maybe their hats are too tight???) They act like automatons. Logan has not figured out where people can "hover" while someone picks up their suitcases. Other airports have a "cellphone" lot where you can park while waiting to hear that your person is ready to be picked up.
For sure, "Matron" should not have parked in the bus lane, true - did she offer to drive around again? to move on and come back? it seems perhaps not.

  1. There's a reason they're called pigs. F Troop at the airport are a bunch of bloated swine who are waiting for retirement or have buddies in high places.

Remember, the 9/11 highjackers breezed through Logan Airport. Lotta good the cops there do.

Posted by raoul April 1, 09 06:01 PM
  1. Clearly delusional and addle-brained. Listen up folks: when a State trooper tells you that you're parked in the bus lane and have to move, you move. You do not roll up your window and ignore him, never mind go for a ride with him hanging on to the side. The reserved bus lane is reserved for buses, please make a note of it. Apparently, you are not the center of the universe.
And for all you people who posted yesterday about how MEAN the staties at the airport are, put yourself in thier shoes for a minute: It's your job to keep people moving, and every single person wants to negotiate with you, and explain why they are the exception. " Of Course I"M not a terrorist, go bother the

REAL ones". You'd get mean real quick too.

  1. I have every hope and expectation that a State Trooper will attempt to arrest a person who commits a felony. He was attempting to write her a ticket and she decided that she no longer wanted to hang around. Once she bumped him… that was a felony. This dim whit should have more respect for the men and women who put themselves in harm's way every day. I guess this woman feels that she is above a lowly public servant and does not need to follow the rules. Let me know how prison food tastes.

  1. as with almost everything, I am sure the truth is somewhere in the middle. Matron is probably a yuppie, entitlement, impressed-with-herself, privileged one who feels she can park where ever she likes. And I have had many pick-ups in the active, car, pick-up lane at Logan and the troopers are arrogant and obnoxious while allowing 0 time for cars to stop and pick people up.
    Go figure.

  1. oh no,,,,,,how tragic...the chauffeur had the night off and Mrs. Swell Person had to drive to the airport.. Only an entitled idiot would end up refusing to go to the cell phone lot, trying to run over a police officer (trying to protect all of us), and then engage in a police chase. What will the cronies at the country club think now!? Book 'em Danno!

  1. I sure wish people would stop bashing the cops. When someone steals your stereo, who you gonna call, your broker? Staties at the airport have a very stressful assignment, from watching morons park, to keeping an eye out for the occasional fundamentalist trying to ambush his way into paradise. To say that they are simply reactionary is to minimize the security they provide. Personally, I have been to Logan literally hundreds of times, and every time I go, I realize that there's going to be a Statie right there, and he's going to tell me to move it along twenty seconds after I arrive. I have no problem with that, since i'd rather live in a country where a cop can tell me to move my car, and not have to live with the fear that a Mazda 626 packed with 400 lbs of plastic explosve may be double parked at the curb. Kind of an easy trade-off, wouldn't you say?

  1. I've had my share of run-ins with the staties at Logan, especially trying to pick up an elderly relative who doesn't move fast enough for them. The cell phone lot really makes things a lot easier. But even given the generally rude state troopers, this woman's reaction was waaaay over the top and continues to be. Running down an officer and then fleeing is more than a momentary lapse of judgment. And then comparing herself to teenagers and poor immigrants?! Somehow the image of a poor investment banker white woman from Wellesley fails to rise to the level of "oppression" she wants us to buy into. As for needing five cruisers, remember that the five cruisers aren't so much catch her but to protect the public from someone who has behaved erratically and dangerously.

  1. Umm, suzyf, Logan DOES have a cell phone lot.

  1. those troopers are losers, they think they own the airport...put themselves in harms way? you clown....they patrol the highways and sit in break down lanes at night to catch people going 60 in a 50.....what big men they are...let me buy them a pack of gum and show them how to chew it..most of them couldn't find the couch in the living room....namaste

  1. When a cop asks you to move along, you move along. You don't argue or fight with him, you do as you are asked.

I mean, you can't sit idling at the airport anymore... Hello? 9/11 anyone? It isn't like Boston was involved in 9/11 at all... or, wait... Gee, I seem to remember that a couple of those planes took off FROM LOGAN! So, security is something they probably take quite seriously...

This woman was driving around with an open container, and wouldn't move when asked by a MSP officer. *I* have to follow the commands of the police. *I* am not allowed to drive with an open beer or cocktail in my car. Why does Ms. Greer seem to think she is above me? Or you? Or any of us? Who cares if she is a Harvard grad? Too much book learnin' rotted away any portion of common sense she had. That or her brain is soaked in too much gin...

  1. I'm not going to read the current 79 comments before posting, so I apologize if this has been covered. I'm getting a very entitled, neo-Con, GOPer read from this woman who seems to be channeling Glenn Beck's 9-12 Project rant. This woman is a loon.

  1. Having recently witnessed a MA state police officer lecture, scream, berate, and yell at my wive in front of our two young kids, for driving 60 mph in a 55 mph strech of I93, I have lost all respect for the MA state police. Whats worse is my kids have as well. These guys are not being hired for the right reasons. The problem is even worse in my local pd. In 5 years time my local pd has killed 3 people for similar altercations that could and should have been handeled much different. These guys should not be public employees with such horrible attitudes

  1. All of you people defending her and claiming that you were only going to be "ONE MINUTE" while you picked up your daughter, son or spouse...

    A) HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF THE PARKING GARAGE?

    B) Have you ever watched the news lately or even any movies about Viet Nam? The terrorists USE kids, women and yes, OLD PEOPLE, because they are automatically thought of as being "safe"!! Ask anybody who has been in Iraq, Afghanistan or Nam!

Defendants are ordered not to contact witnesses. It could be construed as a violation of that order.

  1. Raoul, actually they breezed through Portland's airport. Did you you ever wonder why they are so grouchy? It's because they have to put up with entitled drunks who think they are above the law every day. This one is just nuttier and more dangerous.

  1. Unfortunately most of the commentary here is from small-minded, mean-spirited peons who just want to take pleasure in seeing a rich person - any rich person - take a fall. Maybe she was out of line. maybe she wasn't...I don't know, I wasn't there (and neither were any of you). Here's what I DO know. I've had many encounters with the staties at Logan while picking up my wife who travels a lot on business. I've been waved along many times and had to circle the airport or wait in a parking lot. With few or maybe even no exceptions, the attitude and conduct of the troopers I've encountered has ranged from merely unfriendly to amazingly hostile and rude. I've had them threaten me when, instead of leaving instantly I presumed to ask something like, if there was short term-parking nearby, or could I call my wife's cel to see if she was ten seconds from reaching the curb. If Ms Greer was stupid or arrogant enough to actually do what the trooper is claiming she did, she'll get what's coming to her...but in any case I can totally sympathize with her indignation if she got the same treatment I've always gotten at Logan.

  1. 1. The lady is clearly in the wrong. She was parking at the bus lane and refused to move when told so. Her sense of entitlement is sickening.
    2. Nonetheless, Boston cops are a bunch of over paid, lazy, greedy, corrupt goons. They are the highest paid in the nation but only 1/4 of the city's murders result in conviction. Just about every time a sport team wins here they end up killing some drunken students. The globe not so long ago had an article on how they themselves park at handicapped spots and will never get ticketed.
    3. The lady's rant is true, cops do go for easy convictions and generally prey on the weak. But given this lady's background she is hardly "helpless". There are far more people in this state getting screwed over by the system.

  1. Something similar happened to me at Logan Airport. Several years ago on a during a winter blizzard. I dropped a friend to catch a flight, on my way to work. Then asked a Trooper if I could use the Ted Williams Tunnell at that time it was reserved for commercial only. I explained that it was a more direct route to my office and asked for an exception due to the severe weather. He became enraged and pulled me out of my car then pushed me against the side of my car. The trooper's last name was Boone. He was a short little tyrant, I'll never forget it.

  1. "I sure wish people would stop bashing the cops. When someone steals your stereo, who you gonna call, your broker?"

You might as well. I've had my stereo stolen (among other things in my apartment, laptop etc) and you know how much was recovered with the help of the cops? Zero. Do you know how much interest and effort the cops showed in my situation? Zero. Do you know what zero times any other number is? Zero.

The staties at Logan are jerks. They don't do anything with even a modicum of respect to the people who pay their bills. We don't know what the truth here is, and we still live in an innocent until proven guilty society. I can see her being a jerk, but I have never seen any statie at Logan NOT be a jerk.

  1. She's entitled! She's from Wellesley and drives a Mercedes. Reminds me of Leona Helmsley!

  1. Matron is a freak, but it's true that gung-ho cops can ruin your day for no good reason. There are a lot of them, too. I'm not anti-cop (my brother is a deputy and I know several in the PD), but there are clearly some who have a badge and shouldn't. There are some who will find a way to arrest someone if they don't like their attitude, even if that person is justified in being upset. I've also been in cars at 110 on the freeway because the driver was a cop and didn't have to worry about getting a ticket. Some cops drive drink a lot for that same reason. It's just the truth.
