Investigators have found Philip Markoff's fingerprint at a Rhode Island hotel where a prostitute was held at gunpoint and have also linked him to text messages sent from the scene in Warwick of the most recent Craigslist attack, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation.

Philip Markoff, 23

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Markoff sent text messages from a hand-held device moments after he allegedly fled the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites in Warwick following the April 16 attempted robbery of the prostitute.

The official did not know the recipient of the messages but said investigators were able to pinpoint the location of the person sending them. Authorities determined where the hand-held device was in relation to local cellphone towers.

"He definitely sent text messages literally within moments of the attack," said the official.

The fingerprint and computer evidence make it all but certain that Markoff will be charged soon by Warwick police in the April 16 attempted robbery of the 26-year-old prostitute, said the official.

Markoff, 23, was arraigned Tuesday on charges of murder, kidnapping, and armed robbery in connection with attacks against two women at posh Back Bay hotels whom he allegedly met through Craigslist, an online classified service.

Prosecutors say he fatally shot Julissa Brisman, a 25-year-old masseuse and aspiring model, April 14 at the Boston Marriott Copley Place hotel. They also say he robbed a prostitute at gunpoint at the Westin Copley Place on April 10. He allegedly met her and the prostitute in Warwick through Craigslist as well.

Warwick police have said the attacks for which Markoff was arrested Monday and the one in Rhode Island were strikingly similar. The Warwick victim, a 26-year-old prostitute from Las Vegas, had advertised private lap dances on Craigslist. She told police that her client, a clean-cut blond man who stood about 6 feet tall, tied her up at gunpoint around 11:15 p.m. But after her husband entered the room, the assailant backed out, pointing his gun at the man before fleeing.

Markoff's parents, Richard Markoff and Susan Haynes ran a gauntlet of 20 reporters and photographers staking out the Nashua Street Jail this afternoon to visit their son for the first time since his arrest.

The mother of one of Markoff's alleged victims also spoke out today, saying that her family has been devastated by the killing of her daughter Julissa Brisman, who would have celebrated her 26th birthday today. The mother, Carmen Guzman, said in a statement that she feels "very much relieved that the man who did this is in custody and will not be able to do this horrible thing to another family."

  1. Good, I am glad they were able to connect him to his crime in RI. I just looked at the photos under "Craiglist Attacks) and noticed he wore the same jacket to the three hotels. Also noticed that in every photo, he is holding his Blackberry; perhaps he felt secure holding on to it; in some photos it looks like he is texting. Perhaps he felt by holding on to his BB and texting (or pretending to), nobody would be able to look directly into his eyes (and perhaps see the evil in them). For sure, he was purposely NOT looking at anyone. Not a clean-cut guy afterall!

  1. Guilty until proven innocent NinaK? Please let the police do their work there are enough wrongful convictions in this country. So, unless I am wrong he is innocent until proven guilty? I hope!

  1. I would like to hear the family and fiancée's explanation for the mounting evidence against Markoff, beyond general statements that he is innocent until proven guilty or that the police and media have been provided "false information".

  1. Any chance his fiance is involved? Who would he be texted immediately after the crime? It looks like he's texting right after the other incidences in Boston... I thought it was just a cover to look unsuspicious, but now it sounds like he's actually texting/emailing immediately after he commits these crimes. Who else would he be texting?

  1. My heart goes out to his fiancee. May she find the strength to go on with her life. From a wedding to a trial. I hope with the mounting evidence she sees him for what he is and does not prolong her agony by visiting him or going to his trial.

  1. SOMEHOW i think that the fiance had to know about this "double life" he had..I have not heard her state that she a) was with him the nights if any of these occurences or b) she can say exactly where Philip was & that can be corroborated by witnesses at that place/event. That is the FIRST thing that I would do IF I could, to state to the media that my fiance was innocent.

  1. He was so careless that I think he didn't care if he got caught or wanted to get caught. In any case it's a sad story--lives ruined and destroyed. It sounds like he tried to kill himself or his fellow inmates tried to kill him.

  1. What worries me most about this is not so much the crimes, this type of thing happens all the time... what really worries me (assuming the guy is guilty) is what this says about todays medical establishment. I mean what if this guy graduated and became a doctor? Forget about his ethics, would you want someone this stupid cutting open your abdominal cavity, or even prescribing you medications? Every ten-year-old knows you dont 1) research your crime from your home computer 2) leave your f-ing fingerprints at a murder scene 3) bring the murder weapon and the victims panties back to your home 4)commit another crime with the same MO when your picture is all over the news. If he is found guilty and if even one of these pieces of evidence is true he will be. He might well be the stupidest criminal in history. Getting him of the street may save him millions on malpractice suits.

  1. Very sad story for everyone. I'm still baffled at how the finace can support his story of being innocent with all of this overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

  1. There's an awful lot of information about the facts of this case being made public here. I'm not trying to defend Mr. Markoff, but it seems to me that it will be very difficult for him to get a fair trial. We know a lot of information that should not be revealed until trial. Given the publicity this case has attracted nationwide, a huge potential jury pool has been tainted. Although I commend the Globe reporters for their dilligence, police (and prosecutors) should keep their mouths shut. Mr. Markoff's lawyer has a slam-dunk case for a change of venue petition.

  1. Everyone says that people are innocent until proven guilty but what they fail to realize is that only pertains to a court of law. It does not apply to people like us. I must admit there are some cases where there is a fine line between guilt and innocence, but this is not one of them. It's just not. The following evidence has been linked to this guy:

    1. They were able to trace emails from his address to her email address. Not good buy itself.

    2. They have video surveillance at three hotels all of which look like him. (Weak evidence, but not when put together with everything else I am about to write).

    3. They have his fingerprints on duct tape and the plastic ties he used to bind the victim.

    4. They have found his fingerprints at the Holiday Inn Express as well. If I'm not mistaken, this crime took place AFTER the murder. That shows that this guy has no remorse at all.

    5. The search of his apartment yielded a gun that preliminary tests have shown is the same gun that was used for the killing.

    6. The girl at the first robbery has identified him as the guy who attacked her.

    7. Although I'm not sure how they have determined this, it has been reported that at least two of the victim's underwear was found in his apartment.

Now how on earth do we apply the "innocent" tag to this? If I'm on a jury and I've never heard of this guy, it is my duty as a citizen to have a disposition of innocence toward the guy. But once you've heard the evidence, anyone in their right mind who doesn't think he's guilty is either blind, in denial or just plain sick. Do you think the first victim who identified him thinks he's innocent?

  1. It looks to me like this poor kid was framed well... More I read about him, more I get douts that he really comitted this terrible crime. It looks like cops and a media found another easy target to blame on. First of all we know he is smart and very well educated, then why the heck he left the gun hidden in his apartment? This is stupid, because normally criminals are trying to get rid of weapons used in murders. I bet he even did not know about the gun. Fingerprints are easy to fake. Simply take them off his glass of whatever in casino and put those into whatever place you want. Photographs and Survelliance videos? Not a problem as well. With modern comuter gadgets you could fake them easily and operate any security camera even from China if you want. I would of check his gambling friends first, to see if he won or lost some great amount of money or maybe pissed someone off and now has to pay his terrible price.... Unfortunately, dead girl cannot testify who really killed her...

  1. sOpper: "What does this say about our medical establishment?"

Are you for real? How would a college, grad school, medical school, or business for that matter be able to predict that someone would do something like this? And how do you correlate that b/c he was "sloppy" getting caught doing murder/robbery...he'd make a poor doctor? All this case proves is that crazy and desperate people are everywhere; it doesn't matter their color, sex, creed, education, financial status.

  1. You know what else is so disturbing about this (besides the greatest disturbance: that a young woman had to lose her life needlessly) - that it is another example of a seemingly 'normal' person living two completely different lives. Think of all of the examples we have seen in the past several years of this type of character disorder - Chuck Stuart, Scott Peterson, Ted Bundy, etc. It is really scary that all of this guys friends, family, fiance never saw this coming, except one former friend who said he was 'moody' (Who ISN'T moody???)
I think that is what fascinates and scares us about this whole thing- that there are so many people like this in our midst who can just go on living 2 completely separate compartmentalized lives, until one day when those worlds collide and they are 'found out'. How very sad for the Brisman family, and equally sad in a different way for the Markoff family - two lives lost.

  1. How could the fiance NOT know? If she was not with him, then where was he at random hours at night? Wouldn't one wonder that of their significant other? I would, but I'm a very suspicious/untrusting person. She knows something, and if so, they'll find out.

  1. I am amazed how many people express negativity about his fiancee and his family. Is it easier to see them as fools than it is to admit that maybe our own loved ones could have a dark side without us knowing? One of the defining characteristics of psychopathy is that psychopaths are very good at charming others and hiding their true nature. Let us feel for this poor woman and his family rather than casting blame to puff ourselves up.

  1. well said Chicago John.

A murder weapon tying him to the crime and then attempting to commit the same crime 2 days later shows zero remorse and probably the beginnings of a serial criminal (if not killer). Any jury in this country will convict him.

  1. Personally, I think the fiance' is as disturbed as the criminal! What she needs to do is talk w/ her fiance, visit him like his parents did.... just clinging to hope, she's in la la land --- he's finished, his life is over!

  1. Why is the librul Globe trying to convict Markoff without a trial? Maybe because he's a proud young College Republican and a proud gun owner. That's two things that the Globe doesn't like, so it's a non -stop Markoff smear campaign, day after day. The librul media has no shame, even when it comes to destroying a young man's life. I'm praying for him, and anyone who wants to see justice done will pray for him too. It works!

  1. Guy Incognito, where on earth did you get the idea we had fair trials in this country? That's not how it works.

I've known numerous cases where various conflicts existed with the venue that guaranteed the person would not have a "fair trial" but it did not matter; the venue was never changed. That concept only exists in law books, not real life.

  1. I am sorry the young woman was murdered. So sad. As far as the woman down in Rhode Island, please....give me a break! She was no innocent angel in all of this. Markoff's actions (if indeed guilty) were beyond contempt. Again, that is for the legal system to decide. The Globe and the police should stop releasing every single detail to the public. If by some twist of fate it turns out that Markoff isn't guilty (doesn't look that way though), I hope he files several lawsuits against the newspaper and the Boston and Warwick PD. But, let's focus people. The woman down in Warwick at the hotel was a PROSTITUTE. She was there engaging in illegal acts. Why is she not being charged or her husband? To my knowledge, prostitution is illegal. The woman was a hooker and her husband may or may not have known this. Also, the woman in the hotel who was murdered.....again, this was a tragedy. Is everyone so certain that she was not doing more than offer massages?? She was doing this in a hotel room? Everyone is so quick to condemn the actions of one person while not questioning the acts of others? How do we know that the prostitute in Warwick or her husband didn't pull a gun on Markoff? Is it plausible that the murdered woman didn't have someone else in her room at the time Markoff was supposedly there? Why aren't the police considering other factors? Nope, the good old Globe has tried Markoff in the media before he ever gets his day in court. To all future hookers and prostitutes, if you are going to advertise your goods on Craigslist and camp out in hotels, you had better protect yourselves or make sure your hubby/b-friend sticks close by.

  1. Like a witness has never lied or made a false identification??? Are you kidding? How many thousands of people have been sent to jail for crimes they did not commit? Please. People get falsely accused all the time and years later, the victim recants stating they felt pressured to make a positive identification.

Posted by Scott April 24, 09 07:59 PM
  1. Based on the scientific evidence - if the reporting is correct - this guy would be convicted even if they moved the venue. To wit: His fingerprints everywhere, tying the gun from his home to the murder, text messages and photos placing him at the hotel, same binders as used in the crime were found in his house, and underwear from the victims hidden in his house. The only stronger evidence would be if the victim rose from the dead and identified him. Get over yourself if you think that the change of venue would make any difference. Any rational jury will convict him in the evidence set forth in the Globe articles is correct.

Posted by Lawyer April 24, 09 08:06 PM
  1. Scott, did those people have the gun that killed the victims? Did they have fingerprints at the scene? Did they have emails to the victims in their inbox? Did they have the victims underwear? I agree that there have been misidentifications and I'll even buy that they happen all the time, but that's NOT what we are talking about here. And if he is innocent (which he's not), but if he is....why did he try to off himself in jail?

  1. @ ChicagoJohn, " if I'm on a jury and I've never heard of this guy, it is my duty as a citizen to have a disposition of innocence toward the guy. "

It's your explicit duty to have a *presumption* of innocence (not a mere disposition), whether you've heard of the guy or not. As a jury member, you decide the case based only on the argument presented by the prosecution and the argument presented by the defense. Not based on what you read in the Globe.

Posted by steve April 24, 09 08:22 PM
  1. Scott, Johnny Wingnut and Illuminati,
I also believe that he should be presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. However, this idea that he was framed by bookies or the police is getting a little silly, considering all the additional information that is being leaked. If I were on the jury, there's no way I would convict based on the photos or videos. However, if you give me fingerprint matches at all 3 crime scenes, 2 eyewitness IDs, no alibis, and robbing another woman (even if she was a prostitute) at gunpoint AFTER the murder, I would have a hard time finding reasonable doubt. (that's assuming all of the aforementioned evidence indeed exists).

For those who think this is a "set up" by the liberal media, you give the liberals a lot more credit than they deserve. I'm no liberal and I think the charge is preposterous.

And for the person who thinks the prostitutes should be charged with crimes in this case, I ask, which is the greater crime, providing sex in exchange for money or murdering a woman? In my book, the police are doing the right thing by ignoring the lesser crime and prosecuting the more serious, deadly crime.

Lastly, who cares if he was a med student? That doesn't make him a good person, that just makes him book smart. Have you read the statistics on the number of doctors who are drug addicts, alcoholics, and abusers? Most of us would shake in our boots if we knew what our doctors (teachers, lawyers, and politicians) were really like.

  1. All this negative talk neglects to focus on the positive: this case is absolutely fascinating to many people all over the English-speaking world, and as such, pulls in newspaper readers and TV watchers, all of whom are exposed to ads, for which the media pay and some of whose originating establishments are patronized by some readers/viewers. Which means, Markoff has pumped up the economy by more than zero. Which does not absolve him of the crime which he is probably guilty of, but let's be a little more optimistic: just as Nixon's Watergate plumbers pumped up the Washington Post's circulation, so to is Markoff indirectly responsible for helping to lift our economy. He may even have given Foxwoods free publicity. This is a WONDERFUL opportunity for heretofore unemployed newspaper reporters and for Hollywood scriptwriters and hence technical personnel at movie studios..

    Good grief....comuter graphics?
Or Hey maybe Santa & Easter Bunny did it and framed him - they're always "lifting prints off casino glasses" and re-apply them at murder & robbery scenes of johns who hired hookers and then text their fiances ....because as you say it's easy to do these things.

But seriously enough with the trying to rationalize the lack of evidence disposal by a sociopath as any half baked defense. That is as futile as questioning why he did it as if that alone compelling (hint: he did it because he's a flippin sociopath). If he didn't want to be caught he wouldn't have been so sloppy or so frequent a perpetrator - no amount of deep thought or argument on the subject changes that logic.

  1. To those questioning where the fiancee was during all of this: another article published recently said that she had been visiting her family in New Jersey the week that the attacks took place and returned to Boston last Saturday, a day or two after the last attack. I think this was all in the Globe article where the cops talked about their surveillance of the guy in the days leading up to the arrest.

Wonder why the kids turn out to be sociopaths...parents tell them they can "do no wrong". Want an example?? Just say something critical to a kid who has done something rude...and listen to the parents, in front of the kid, tell you how mean you are to the little darling. They NEVER do anything wrong...so they can act in any rude, homicidal or other manner without fear of repercussions or criticism.

  1. one of the victims were a prostitute, anyone think that maybe she was told give false evidence and she wouldnt be charged? there is a book on a man that is almost hung but he was really innocent. It was a true story and they managed to save him just in time. Two other men were hanged unfortuntaley , sorry not hanged but given teh death sentence and were injected. PLEASE, dont get carried away with all that is being told in the newspaper. Give the man a trial. For all we know the real killer can be walking around and when this man gets jailed, 25 years later it will be found out that he was innocent and the real killer recently passed away.

Look outside the box, did this man really want to get caught?
what kind of med student would be this sloppy to leave so much evidence.
Same coat? same MO? hmmmmm panties in his house????
the coat and MO can make sense, but why the panties? hes engaged... did realy want to get caught by his fiancee?

some details are abit fishy, some evidence could be rigged.
get away from the news and read that book to open up your minds.

i feel bad for him and his family. something somewhere went awry- whether it be when he was a kid and it was ignored, or as an adult and he couldnt be honest with anyone. i truly doubt the fiancee has anything to do with this. she is keeping a brave face, but she will bail soon.

  1. Give me a break! He has been positively IDed by one of the victims, several of the victim's artifacts are at his apartment, his fingerprints are all over the crime scenes and he possesses a gun type that matches the gun that killed the victim. His sloppiness at his crime scenes and the people he chooses to victimize are further proof of a budding serial killer.

Furthermore, I find it even more disturbing that so many people are creating outlandish conspiracy theories to defend him (probably because he is a white medical student with a beautiful fiancee froma supposedly christian family.)
