First hotel victim 'glad' about arrest

April 21, 2009 11:29 AM

By Maria Cramer, Globe Staff

A woman robbed by a man who is accused of using Craigslist ads to lure victims to hotels said today that she is grateful that police made an arrest.

Trisha Leffler, 29, a prostitute who lives in Las Vegas, was bound with plastic ties, gagged, and robbed at gunpoint on April 10 in a room at the Westin Copley Place hotel. She had arranged to meet the man through an ad she posted on Craigslist.

"I'm glad," Leffler said. "He can't do it to anybody else."

Leffler reported being robbed of a debit card, $800 in cash, and $250 in American Express gift cards. She declined to discuss the attack in detail.

"It's still kind of fresh right now," the woman said.

Last night police arrested a Boston University medical student and charged him with the robbery at the Westin and a similar attack four days later that left a woman dead on the 20th floor of the Marriott Copley. Philip Markoff, 23, was arraigned today in Boston Municipal Court.

  1. I agree! Why isn't the woman being arragned for being a prostitute? What a mess!

  1. Yea Kamaal...im sure the police are dying to arrest this women so she can refuse to testify. Then a murderer goes free but the community is happy because a prostitute got 10 hours of community service. Why dont people use their brain?

  1. That is a pretty dumb comment...

In your opinion I guess we could all could go out and rob and kill people who break the law?

  1. How would the police be "selling" the story to make money? What is this fiancee talking about.

  1. To #1. It's arraigned, not arranged. And no.

  1. They haven't mentioned yet whether or not the previous victims have identified the man that has been arrested... shouldn't that be something that happens first? I am certainly not trying to protect him... but I am just curious to how they found him.

  1. The BPD did a phenomenal job of quickly building a case, and apprehending the suspect before he did hurt, or killed, more women.

  1. The police aren't after the prostitutes they're after the killers

  1. if no money exhanged hands from John to prostitute because of sexual favors she did not commit a crime. There has to be solid evidence folks, just saying someone is a prostitute doesn't necessarily make them one until you have the proper evidence in place. Even when a murderer confesses to killing someone they still need evidence to back up the confession.

  1. Yes - lets screw up the murder/armed robbery/kidnapping case by arresting and charging the witnesses!

  1. DUH PEOPLE!!! Prostitution is legal in Nevada - so the prostitute will not be arrested. Know your facts before you spew stupidity!

  1. Prostitution is legal in Nevada. Sex for money is also legal in RI. The murdered woman in MA would be the only one who allegedly broke a law. But obviously, the punishment does not fit the crime and regardless, who ever did this did not have the proper authority to judge.

  1. From the little we can gleam from the article, the woman never did anything illegal. Last I checked it's not illegal for her to meet men through craigslists for massages. Only to take money from them for sex and from the little the article reveals, I am not sure it even got to that point. For example, you can have every intention of buying drugs from me. I can email you and set up a time for you to buy them but if I shoot you and steal your money before hand doesn't mean you broke the law necessarily.

  1. WOW.....why aren't they arresting the woman? I want you people on my jury

  1. Hey KAMAAL,

When they decide to give Illegal Immigrants driver's licenses, do you expect them to arrest you for being an illegal immigrant when you go to apply?

    Here's hoping they do...

  1. We have people being (arranged), money being (exhanged). It's a good thing my english is terrible. Otherwise, I would not be able to understand what is being said.

  1. I've met a few people who blew their $18,000 in student loan money on drugs and gambling, and then had to scramble to come up with their tuition payment or be kicked out of school. This guy probably did the same and then panicked when he could not pay his tuition to BU Medical School, which led him on this crime spree. Does the school even have an outreach program to help these students? I guess they will start one now.

  1. It is entirely legal to offer massages in exchange for money on Craigslist or in any other venue. The fact that other activities may or may not occur is a point of contention and is in fact, behind the efforts of one Illinois official to ban Craigslist "Erotic Services" postings in that state. Unless such activities become illegal, there is no basis for arresting the woman. She broke no Massachusetts laws.

Further, as was noted above, it makes no sense to arrest an eyeball witness when that witness is already willing to testify or identify the perp. A litle logic goes a long way.

  1. She was potentially performing an act, albeit an illegal act, between what she thought was two consenting adults there for the same reason. "He" had already murdered one person and was robbing someone else at gunpoint. If you don't see a difference there then there is something seriously wrong with you. Where would you philosophy on the law end? If you were going 5 miles over the speed limit and where hit by a drunk driver, should you be arrested too?

  1. Obviously he choose these women because they were an easy target and wouldn't go running to the police about being robbed I'm glad he was caught and off the street regardless. May that poor girl rest in peace.

  1. Ah, how about asking her is Markoff is the man who robbed her? Is this too difficult, did I miss it?

  1. Prostitution is legal in Nevada, but not in Clark County, aka Las Vegas.
Know your facts before you spew them!

  1. Whoever said that this crime may have been in part from this sicko losing his tuition money needs to have their head examined...I mean, no one in their right mind would do this.....He's a serial killer that thankfully was caught earlier than most. I bet at some point in his life he recieved services for his mental illness.....If so the therapists, doctors, and family involved should also be arrested, because Im sure there were plenty of signs that this guy was not normal......

Posted by Ed April 22, 09 03:21 PM
  1. Prostitution is legal only in certain counties in Nevada. Las Vegas is not in one of those counties. Also, it only applies to brothels, not streetwalkers or internet.
