Hack: Red Line train tops MIT dome

Red Line users: At this stop, be sure to exit only to the left. A step to the right would lead straight off MIT's Great Dome.
Those brainy pranksters struck again overnight at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, placing an ersatz two-car Red Line train atop the dome. The school has a storied tradition pranks or "hacks" in which everything from a fake police cruiser to replica of the Wright Brothers' plane have appeared mysteriously on the dome.
The school declined to discuss the Red Line train, which can be seen by clicking here. In what may be an indication of the severity of budget cuts at the MBTA, however, the pranksters could not even come up with a three-dimensional version of a Red Line train. The object on the dome appears to be a flat poster painted like a Red Line train that can be seen flapping gently in the breeze.
Other hacks have transformed the dome into a replica of Star Wars robot R2-D2 or adorned it with a giant beanie and a to-scale propeller that spun. To see more, click here.

That is weak! Compared to the pranks of years past, this one is a sorry excuse and looks very much half-baked. BOO!
Two dimensions? Weak.
As creative as they are intelligent. Kudos and huzzahs. The joy continues. Thank you. :)
Boring! Come on MIT...You can do better than that!
Seen better.

MIT Community College. Actually, it looks kinda like the wall of my kid's elementary school. Even Mr. Rogers had a working model!
Judging by the fact that this thing has solar panels, appears that it sits on some sort of metal track around the perimeter AND that this is MIT after all, I'm assuming that this thing was SUPPOSE to move around the building on some sort of motors. Now THAT would have been pretty cool!
Beats walking into Logan wearing lights and wires and wondering why you have M16's pointed at you....
Extremely lame.
If it were a real train, then we would be impressed. This is weak.
Looks like BC send over its best and brightest to put up that paper mache model... can't be MIT students
No doubt, my favorite will ALWAYS be R2D2...CLASSIC!
This year's attempt does seem to be a bit lacking; maybe it's the economy!
I LOVE it! It's creative yet aligned with the recession--no fancy cop cars or other big successes. It's a statement of the times. Great job!
It would be cooler if it circulated around the dome, yes?
I think its great. Really, who cares whether its two- or three dimensional -- we are not going to ride it. Why do people have to always tear everything and everybody down?
Lame. It didn't even make it to the roof.
This prank is CalTech quality, at best.
yeah, that's some of the 'best and the brightest' at work!
these pea-brains clearly don't have enough to do, spending mommy and daddy's trust fund money to attend MIT....
Maybe they should have placed a poster of a bunch of college students standing in an unemployment line to celebrate their next coming years in this economy
Dear Boston.com writers,
Please stop using the word "ersatz"... you've worn it out. At least consult the thesaurus and come up with a few other new words to try and sound intelligent.
LAME!
C'mon kids, you can do better!
Guys, the hackers went back on the dome last night and fixed it. Now the train actually moves around the dome. What do you think those solar panels are for? Don't judge, especially if you don't have the courage or intelligence to pull off something so amazing--and the determination to go back and fix it if it doesn't work right the first time.
I'm glad to read that those solar panels are working. If it does not work the first time, make sure that it works the second time, The age-old adage advises to try, try again. Yup, those age-old adage makers were the wise ones. Congratulations on a brilliant idea!
weak?? it's a solar powered MOVING hack. i'm impressed.
Jim- my boyfriend goes to MIT and is by no standards a trust fund baby. MIT accepts the best and the brightest no matter if you can afford it or not. It is one of the most inclusive in the country in that respect. The guys and girls that go here have the real brains.
sometimes the simplest looking things out there are the hardest ones.
