Heavy rain brings flood warnings overnight
By Stewart Bishop, Globe Correspondent
Flood advisories are in effect for much of Eastern Massachusetts this evening, as thunderstorms dump heavy rain on the region.
"We're looking at the possibility of some urban street flooding in Eastern Massachusetts," said Charlie Foley, meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Taunton. Of particular concern: low-lying streets in poor drainage areas, he said.
Foley said he expects 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches of rain to fall over the area tonight. With temperatures in the low 40s, the showers will add to the overall chill. He expects Southeastern Massachusetts will experience the most rainfall.
The heavy rain should subside by late tonight, with only a few lingering showers expected tomorrow, which should not affect the morning commute.
Heavy showers forced the Red Sox to postpone their home opener this afternoon with the Tampa Bay Rays.
As of 5 p.m. today, almost an inch of rain had fallen in Boston, while areas further south had received upwards of two inches. The brunt of the rain should be over at around 8 p.m. in Boston.
