Man arrested after standoff with police in Carver

April 7, 2009 03:09 PM

By Michele Richinick, Globe Correspondent

Police engaged in a four-hour standoff that stretched into this morning with a 38-year-old man who refused to leave his mother's home in Carver.

William Flynn had set up "weapons" that could have injured officers entering the two-family home apartment on Tremont Street, said Police Sergeant Michael Miksch. Miksch did not elaborate on what the weapons were.

Just after 8:30 p.m. Monday, police attempted to serve a restraining order from Vermont against Flynn. Flynn answered the door and was verbally and physically abusive to the officer, who suffered minor injuries, Miksch said.

Flynn then retreated to the second-floor apartment and refused to leave, Miksch said. Officers from Carver and other area departments, as well as the Plymouth County sheriff's office, responded to the incident.

Police unsuccessfully attempted to persuade Flynn to surrender. A State Police negotiator contacted Flynn by telephone and by loudspeaker, but Flynn refused to leave the house and acknowledge any more phone calls.

A State Police SWAT team fired bean bags to break the second-floor windows, then shot tear gas into the house.

Flynn surrendered just before 1 a.m. Police took him to the Carver police station, where he attempted to assault another officer, Miksch said.

Flynn was arraigned today in Wareham District Court on charges of assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, disturbing the peace, and assault.

Police also discovered that Flynn had two outstanding arrest warrants from Barnstable District Court for malicious damage to property and defacing property.
