Sources: Craigslist suspect kept victims' underwear as mementos

Police searching the Quincy apartment of Philip Markoff found underwear from two of the victims in the Craigslist attacks and a handgun hidden in a hollowed-out copy of the medical textbook Gray's Anatomy of the Human Body, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation.

Philip Markoff, 23

The underpants were described as "mementos" from the crimes, according to another law enforcement official, who also spoke on the condition of anonymity. It was not known from which victims the garments were taken, the officials said. Investigators are testing the gun to determine whether the semi-automatic weapon was used to fatally shoot a 26-year-old masseuse last week at the Boston Marriott Copley Place.

Markoff, 23, is a Boston University medical school student who pleaded not guilty yesterday to charges stemming from attacks against two women in posh Back Bay hotels. Police in Warwick, R.I., say a prostitute who also advertised on Craigslist was attacked in a hotel there last Thursday, but Markoff has not been charged with that crime. No new victims have come forward so far, one of the law enforcement officials said today.

Authorities have said that his alleged crimes may have been motivated by a gambling problem and a desire to dominate his victims.

"He chose women, and he chose women who were living somewhat on life's margins, so that he could dominate them, abuse them," Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said. "He seems to have no problem physically hurting women and dominating them."

In a statement released today, Rhode Island Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch said that investigators in Warwick "developed promising information" about the robbery April 16 at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites. "Although we’re encouraged by the progress being made, this is a complex investigation and is going to take more time," Lynch said.

After Markoff's arraignment yesterday, his lawyer, John Salsberg, declared that his client is not the man some have nicknamed the Craigslist killer.

"Philip Markoff is not guilty of the charges," Salsberg told reporters. "He has family support. Philip is bearing up. It's obviously a difficult time, for anybody under these circumstances, for the charges that have been brought against him . . . He pleaded not guilty. He is not guilty."

Prosecutors contend that Markoff shot Julissa Brisman three times with a handgun after they struggled fiercely in the doorway of her room on the 20th floor of the luxury Marriott Copley. The fatal shot pierced her heart, Assistant District Attorney Jennifer J. Hickman said at the arraignment yesterday. He also bashed her head in, Hickman said.

Four days earlier, Hickman said, he tied up Trisha Leffler, a 29-year-old prostitute from Las Vegas, at gunpoint at the Westin Copley Place and stole her debit card, $800 in cash, and $250 in American Express gift cards.

  1. Talk about putting a nail in your own coffin ! Keeping mementos of your victims is classic psychopathic mass murderer behavior. Either there are other victims not uncovered yet or we can be thankful that his intelligence level is below that of the average mass murderer and he got himself caught after just 1 kill.

  1. You noticed there was a "stepfahter". What happened to his biological father?
Also, mother working in a casino probably gave him exposure to developing his poker skills as outlined in his yearbook comment.

A pathetic bully who was living a double life. The fiancee may find that in retrospect much of what he told her as to where he was at mightnight, 10 p.m., etc. when crimes were committed just doesn't ad up. Thankfully, she didn't marry him. She is no doubt scarred for life, however, and he's hurt many people including his victims. May the dead woman rest in peace.

  1. So Markoff saved his victims underwear, and he liked to hurt women. One of his friends from college said that he was a 'conservative', but Markoffs behavior doesn't sound like any of the other conservatives that I know. Librul globe, trying to sell the story. Next thing you know, they'll be saying that he was a real 'family values' guy, like Senator diaperman Vitter.

  1. ahhh if it is so true that these pairs of underwear really belong to the victims and not his fiance, then 1) the officers wouldnt speak on anonymity, they would always cite their name for a fact 2) how did he get the underwear? are we saying he robbed them all of money AND demanded their panties?? otherwise, how did he get it?? and 3) hed really leave womens panties in the apt he shares with his fiance where she could easily find it??

come on!! print a REAL story with REAL evidence to support it!!!

  1. The Boston PD and the other law enforcement agencies are to be commended for the excellent work they performed leading to the arrest of this dangerous suspect. It is a profound tragedy that a young woman lost her life.
When I was a Med Student at BU I didn't have a luxury apartment, or own a car, or have the time or
money to go to a casino for a weekend of gambling
with a fiancee. Better to have nabbed him now rather tan after getting an MD.

Probably more accurate to say he chose *escorts on Craigslist* because that was the easiest way to get someone who was physically weaker than him alone in a room without anyoe of his (or likely their) social circle knowing that they even knew each other.

Perhaps? I mean come on people are you all that naive? For the idiot who questions why a criminal would keep evidence around their home? Did you know that Jeffrey Dahmer kept victims skulls in his freezer? Why they do this I don't know but facts are some criminals keep souveniers. Finally to the quack who says he doesn't look like a killer/criminal... Neither did Ted Bundy! He was a LAW student for gosh sakes! Please people come back to reality. The evidence is mounting on this guy and I predict a verdict of guilty on all counts barring a plea deal.

Gee, I don't know. Maybe when the two women who survived reported the robbery they said "oh, and he took my underwear". Do you really think the police are just going to assume any underwear found in his house might belong to the victims without knowing what they're talking about?

    Stop and think.

It is not known TO THAT SOURCE which victim they belong to. That doesn't mean that the police who actually confiscated them don't know.

  1. I was thinking the same thing about the underwear. How do they know they were the victims underwear? How come this is the first time there is any mention that the victims underwear were taken? There has not been a word in the press about this fact. They can verify this by DNA I am sure. Why has there not been mention of a sketch from either of the surviving victims to compare him to? There was a total of 3 surviving people that supposedly laid eyes on him. The Westin victim and the couple in RI. How did the husband happen to show up in the RI case? Was he in on it with her and her services? Or did they make it up to get in the media's eye? I mean the guy got away. Odd.

Of course, I hope they have the right person and that this not a coverup of any sort. Do they have proof that his email sent email to the victims? Do they have phone records to the victims from Markoff? This would be "real" evidence. They are just saying that they have information and not really details... Yet you are giving us details such as underwear???

  1. missy509 and myria - Guessing you are, or know his girlfriend- because you are the only two defending this guy when its beyond obvious to every other rational person he couldn't be any more guilty. In my opinion he isn't that smart, and I for one, am glad he wont be a doctor if this is proof of his I.Q.

Missy- so you are demanding a rational reason why this guy would bring other women's underwear home, when you are missing that fact that he contacted women on craigslist, met them at hotels and robbed them and KILLED someone. How rational is that?
Also- People speak to the press under anonymity because its an on going investigation and really shouldn't be saying much to begin with.

Do either of you guys live with someone? Do you search every square inch of your place everyday? Do you? No you don't, no one does, especially when you don't think you have a reason to. So the fact he collected his victim's underwear and brought it home isn't that surprising, just stupid. A lot of predetors collect or save things from their crimes. I dont think he " demanded" their underwear. I'm sure he just took what he wanted when they were tired up or dead.
    I
"Its not known from which victim the garments were taken." Why is that a problem? They can't expand too much on the evidence they found until its bought into court., but perhaps his girlfriend only wears one style of underwear or one maker. Or when asked if she owned a bustier or panites that are purple with pink poka dots she said no. Prehaps they found the tops in one hotel and the matching bottoms in his apartment. You don't know- but I'm sure it will all come out when he goes on trial for murder.

I'm sure you two think OJ was framed too.

  1. Wow. There is a whole lot of stupid in these comments. For the police are out to get everyone crowd:
    1. Read between the lines: craigs list masseuse can easily be a stripper or a hooker which means dancing naked, etc. He didn't rob them and then demand they take their underwear off, it was probably already off and he used their vulnerable state to rob them.
    2. You think the police didn't do some sort of testing on the underwear before making a statement saying that it was the victims? Police usually have some sort of evidence and don't go around making wild claims like the people here.

And I'm sure she also bras, jeans, boots, shoes, a BUNCH of things belonging to "a woman" that they didn't bother to mention because it's not relevant. No doubt they found the underwear in question stashed in the back of his closet or in a hollowed out copy of 'Lady Chatterley's Lover' or in some other suspicious place. So, if they DO belong to his future wife, he's at least guilty of hording her underpants.

Posted by jeb April 22, 09 03:29 PM
  1. My bet is the underwear might have been found in a hollowed out book also, or otherwise, not some place his gf would put hers. I'm sure they can be DNA tested and maybe they already have been. If the victims reported their underwear stolen and a description of them (victims that survived) , that could point to the fact they were not his gf's. I doubt police pulled them out of gf's drawer and said 'ha, these belong to the victims'.

If that was the case (specualtion) it wouldn't suprize me if he's still in manic state; this could potentially explain this sudden rash of behavior. That doesn't dismiss the severity or any possible premeditated decision to possess a firearm.

When was last time Boston.com was wrong? Yesterday when the printed a story of a Marine with bomb making equipment and undisclosed handgun trying to sneak onto a plane...That undisclosed handgun ended up being a disclosed legal handgun. The so-called "conservatives" I know don't all act as a unit... a thriving hive of cyborgs who all have the exact same opinions, think the same way and behave the same way. Neither do the so-called "liberals." The way you and others have of lumping people into categories and assuming each person in a particular category is exactly the same as the others in that category is a pox on the world. Your comment is ridiculous hyperbole. How could anyone take someone like you seriously?

    Posted by Getting_Poorer April 22, 09 03:38 PM
  1. Commenters above-- where did you get the idea he lived with his fiancee? That does not seem to be the case. Police would know there are mementos because serial attackers that keep mementos do it in patterned ways. He is not the first one to want to keep mementos of his victims. And the victims that lived will say he took their underwear. And they will be able to say later -- Yes, that was mine.

Obviously, he arrived at the hotels on the pretense of having sex (that is what erotic ads are about, duh, she was not really a "model") -- so he would pretend to be interested in that, remove the underwear, and then pull out his zip ties and rob them. Julissa fought back and was killed. I don't get how any of you are having a problem understanding this.

And let's face it, by now, his lovely wife-to-be has probably switched sides and is likely working with the cops, maybe even hoping to swap out a detective as her groom so she does not have to lose her wedding downpayments. Okay, I am just kidding... maybe.

Of course, we all know that anything you see on TV or on the Web or read in a newspaper - well, it must be true, right? Perhaps we should just abolish our criminal court system - since many of you have all facts already, really, what purpose does it serve?

  1. op-ack has it exactly right: "It is not known TO THAT SOURCE which victim they belong to."
I.E.,The statement that the source didn't know which victim they belonged to doesn't mean that the police who actually confiscated them don't know or that an investigator doesn't. Someone in the department close to the investigation was probably anonymously quoted as learning that one ore more garments had been verified as belong to one or more victims... but he had no more details. Q: Why are a few people like Missy509 working so hard in the forum to suggest that all the evidence is bogus before knowing more details? It seems a reasonable assumption that the BPD are not fools.

  1. Ok everyone keeps asking how the police know it's not his fiancee's underwear. Maybe DNA, but I don't think they can get those results this fast. Probably it's not his fiancee's size. Maybe his fiancee is way larger (or smaller) than his victim. So for all you armchair detectives out there trying to figure out where the pros got it wrong, maybe, just maybe, they actually know what they're talking about and have pretty good evidence that the underwear actually DID belong to the victim.

  1. maintaining an attitude of " innocent till proven guilty" in light of the seemingly overwhelming evidence against this man does not mean you believe this man is innocent. Based on what we know, his guilt seems certain, but that is not the same as conviction. both the guilty and innocent are entitled to an assumption of innocence by the courts until their trial is concluded. In the case of the guilty, the delay in retribution is temporary and unaffected by the delay of "due process of law". If the evidence is as overwhelming as it seems to be, there is nothing that will keep this person from a deservedly horrible fate. I can not understand why some clamor for pronouncement of guilt and administration of justice before a trial occurs. It is as obvious as a punch in the nose that this process serves to prevent injustice to the innocent. The forestalling of justice for the guilty is a small price to pay in order to protect the innocent. Further, the purpose of punishment is NOT vengeance. It is to ensure the safety of society by removing those who can not be trusted from our midst and to set an example that will act as a deterrant to others. Vengeance is reserved for a much higher court than any available in this life

    This is cable news-style reporting.

@Missy509: when investigators use the term, “Mementos” it is because they are items not found in normal places….for example, an underwear drawer. They found two pairs, they said. This leads me to believe that they were a) not the same brand as the ones the fiancé wears and b) were not with other underwear. He hollowed out a book and hid a gun inside it. And yes, he could hide these things so his fiancé would never find them. If the police were making it up, they would also add “bras” and “jewelry” to the list. As for how do you get a hooker’s underwear? Well, how do you THINK you get a hooker’s underwear? Remember, the Green River Killer picked on prostitutes. The BTK Killer was an active member of the church and an upstanding member of his community and his wife or kids had no clue what he was doing. I’m just saying that it is more possible than you think to keep a darker side hidden.

  1. i understand that in the UK, evidence is withheld from publication until the trial in order to ensure that prejudicial information does not influence potential jurors if left unanswered - as it often is. It seems that no harm would come to society by our having the same restrictions. The guilty would still be punished but justice is more likely to be served in the case of the innocent who have convincingt responses to charges against them. Their reputations are then less likely to be needlessly harmed. We should do likewise. Accusations of horrible crimes should be done in court and the public should simply wait till the process completes itself. The result will be the same as if they heard the evidence immediately. I

He could very well be the killer, but printing articles based on speculation and not on fact is stupid. The facts also present only $53, 000 in gambling winnings. Just because he gambled does not make him a gambler. The man does not fit the initial profile of the "heroin drug addict.."

  1. to ajr- Try googling up some current UK crime cases. You will notice they do not even use the word "allegedly." They are way more into blabbing and blaming. They even do it with US stories in UK publications. In this situation with Mr. Markoff, the investigation at first was ongoing and police released the surveillance photos to get assistance from the public, to bring forth other victims, and to warn potential victims. It worked! They are still asking any possible other victims to come forth -- if they are alive to come forth!

We are not a jury! We are just a stupid public Comment board. We have every right to believe the police caught the right man. Among other things, our belief in his guilt excludes us from ever participating in the jury.

We all know, evidence is sometimes shaky. But in this case, I do not believe it is. That is why the police are showcasing it -- it makes them look smart and capable. There are clear photos from 3 hotels, a documented gambling problem, a gun, zip ties, underwear, emails and past emails, his own prior Craigslist posting offering sex services, phone calls, eyewitnesses, most likely DNA. So hello? He is nailed. Thank goodness. I use Craigslist and this is one less psycho on there using it, thousands more left to go!

Of course you have your constitution that says the press is free and few argue the need for much control. Like anything some descretion is needed. 1. From the "evidence" about PM so far:
He is not a serial killer. His is a stalker, and a robber. That explained why he kept those "mementos". But one of the times things got out of control. He was surprised that the girls would fight back, so he was panic and killer her. That would explain why he left so many traces for the police to catch him. In his mind, those Craigslist women would never call police for the robbery, and that's why he felt so safe. However, once a girl is dead, it totally changed the nature of the crime.......
If I were his layer, I would be bargaining with Police for Manslaughter: because PM was not intend to kill.... he might just want to scare the girl, but things got out of control...... And based on MA law, he would be free in 20 years... for a Wall Street job perhaps....? That's may explain why Boston PD is still looking for leads to other possible crimes because they are also unwilling to give up this guy so easy.....
The weapon and underwears are just part of his psycho ......

All of this discussion about IP addresses, victim's panties, surveillance video, a gun hidden in a medical book are not "evidence" until entered in as evidence in a court of law. Evidence needs to meet specific criteria to be admitted as evidence such as chain of custody. Based on what the media has reported it doesn't look good for Markoff, but that does not make him guilty....yet. Let this case play out in the court and let the police do their job.

The fiancee is a tall woman; the guy is 6 ft 3 in tall; she appears to be about 5 ft, 10 in tall. The woman murdered looks like a petite woman. Maybe the suspect wrapped the gun in those two pairs of underwear and were hidden in that carved out medical book. Ted Bundy had things in his home his girfriend did not know about because he kept them hidden. She did discover the plaster, tho, and that helped the case against Bundy. He was "clean-cut" too!

  1. I'm curious what the fiancee says now that they found the victims' underwear in the psycho's room. She originally defended him, but now she has to know that the cops probably saved her from becoming some kind of weird slasher-dismembered-wife victim story 10 years down the road.

  1. OMG you 'innocent-until-proven-guilty Zealots'!! We are not a jury. This is not a court of law. This is a forum for crikey's sake. Back off wouldya?

Look. Listen. Learn. 1) Gun matches 2) surveillance matches 3) cell phone records match 4) description match 5) panties match (not the panties match the bra but you know) 6) eyewitness match

Good grief...what more could you possibly need in order to feel comfortable stating the opinion that this guy is guilty as sin? What?!

Posted by lilymarie April 22, 09 10:36 PM
  1. The cops do a DNA sample from the victims; and do the same on the panties to see if they match. They do the fiance' if they have too. But logically why the fiancé? He could have her panties any time.

Then there is the issue of the emails and links to Craigslist. Remember too Craigslist servers store a lot of datestamp and MAC address too. And the gun and the victim who survived. Lord knows what else they have as evidence.

He is clean cut and all but it ain't looking good for all him and the family...not good at all. Poor Fiancé'

  1. if you guys only knew... this kid really exposes one of the truly ugly side of today's medicine. as the cost of medical education goes up and becomes essentially prohibitive to the vast majority of us, it's only these rich, spoiled, narcissists who can afford the pie in the sky tuition at places like b.u. med, the most expensive medical school in the country. it's been this bad for while now (i know , i went to tufts med almost 20 yrs. ago- same deal). think about it: you are 22, no job, go to a school that's well over 50k a year, and you got time and money to gamble when you should be studying for the boards part one?? unfortunately, these are too often the kind of kids going to med school days. think they care about your co-pay?

  1. "The facts also present only $53, 000 in gambling winnings."

    Only winnings? got links?

" Just because he gambled does not make him a gambler. "

Sure...and all 2nd year med students head to casinos regualrly let alone timed tightly with robberies and let alone on Monday afternoons of a work/.study week....all perfectly normal for one to visit a casino 4x in 2 weeks when a student <eyerool* About as normal and routine as texting from the locations of a string of crime scenes....and happening to look like the perp on surveilance footage (that perp on camera already ID'd by one of the vistims as their assailant)....and just as normal to be hiding semiautomatic pistols in hollowed out med school text books....and happening to have memetos from crime vistims....very routine and innocent. And happening to have zipties and duct tape coincidentall as being the same materials used to bind victims.....and happening to have an IP trail from the victims to their home computer obviously a set up by myster men and not good ole Phil.....just like gambling does not make him a gambler having an increasing body of evidence from a murder and same m.o. robberies doesn't make him a murderer either right? After all Mr Clean cut wouldn't hurt a fly.

    Horse hockey!

  1. Why are all these serial killers predominantly white christian conservatives? (like the guy in Kansas city)

Of course all the parallel mass killers are almost all white christian conservatives (Like bush killed 1M in Iraq, Johnson Nixon killed 1-2M in Vietnam, Truman killed 200K overnight in Japan). Of course Mssrs Hitler and Stalin all started life as white christians.

  1. "Oh and to the people who claim he looks just like the guy on the surveilance...really? you must be looking at some different pictures b/c everyone i see is very grainy. wow, they both have light hair. omg, arrest him!"

Quit changing the subject. He wasn't just arrested because he looks a lot or a little like the guy in the surveillance.....it's that the communications links from the victim led the police to a guy that also happens to not so coincidentally look arguably a LOT like the guy on surveillance (some clearer than other). And while you see no resemblance, or are just arguing for argument's sake and for attention, there were past and present acquaintances and friends of Markoff who DID think the surveillance videos looked just like him. For example "Kehoe said when he saw images of the suspect in the attacks taken by hotel security cameras, there was no doubt in his mind that Markoff was the man pictured."
    msnbc.msn.com/id/30321664/
And the police thanked the public for helping build a case and compelling arrest justification.

For what it's worth I see the same jaw line, nose, hair style.....wanna bet they found the ball cap and jacket in his apartment too? But then again it's not the surveillance that busted him as much as the internet use and likely texting done and that can be synced to surveillance.

One last time for Missy and the others isolating issues in defense of someone they are so overly worried about getting a fair shake-
it's the BODY of EVIDENCE that will prove compelling or not and how it's presented - NOT any one issue and not how nice this guy looks or how much he loves his fiance or their kitty cat or whatever other irrelevant fodder.

Nothing said in these forums will change that the evidence and story that adds it up for the jury is what will matter...provided a plea deal isn't made.

  1. -Whatever happens to innocent until prove guilty? For all we know, the Boston PD could be overzealous and framed this guy? Who knows? Please refrain from passing judgment. Because you know as much as I do about this guy; which is not much. The things we know about him are the things that are being control-released by the BPD. I don't think that's very fair. BPD has been wrong in many investigations before. We did not hear his side of the story.
-You guys are like the mobs, similar to those people from the middle ages where a king would say someone guilty then you would throw stones at him or her without knowing if the person was guilty or not. Use your judgement wisely. It's one of the best civic duty you have.

Based on what I have seen in the press I would think Markoff probably did do this but I will wait to judge him until he has his day in court. If he did it I hope he gets everything he deserves.

  1. Reports mentioned he moved in with the girlfriend. Someone above didn't think they lived together. Perhaps if he took the underwear from victims, it was to humiliate them, and they wouldn't have clothing on to run to get help. That would take extra time? The first escort said he never touched her. So do you really think he was going to these women for sex? It appears he was going there to rob them after getting them in a compromised situation. Then again, we don't know what he wrote over computer, but he was leading them to believe he was meeting them for their massage services, etc. Whatever the case. This is a horrible crime. I feel bad for women who put their lives on the line trying to make a living this way. It is not our place to judge them, because we know in this economy finding a job even for ivy league grads is a chalenge. Let's hope all people come forward who may have been victims of this predator, and as another person mentioned, perhpas noone has come forth because they are dead. With technology his activity will be traced back, and the PD will have a greater insight as to how long he was involved in these types of activities. It appears he is the man who was filmed, and with the compulsive habit of gambling, he was clearly driven by something of which he had no control. It was stated he played poker for years. His mother working in a casino was probably exposure to this for him, and who knows what he saw being around a casino. Aren't they known for having women of the night frequent casinos to pickup men who have scored gambling? At least that was the case in Las Vegas. Poor Julissa, trying to turn her life around, and she'd met that nice man who went to Yale. It was to be her last time.

    >> For all we know, the Boston PD could be overzealous and framed this guy?

Then for all we know Santa and Easter bunny did it and the cops are framing this guy because it's more plausible *shrug* Come on now....Either this is some mass conspiracy by zealous cops to frame a guy many would never believe to be guilty because of his superficial attributes OR more likely there's a lot of stinking turds about this guy's behavior that are being unearthed from many a unbiased source. You decide? Nope - don't bother, a jury will....and in the mean time this is virtual whisky talk about the unveiling of an interesting case.

excuse me, did you say you graduated from medical school? I have been a faculty member for 3 medical schools for over 26 years and I have never encountered this -- or anything close to this-- in my career. I find it appalling that you pass judgement on an entire generation of med students who are putting in long hours with great dedication because of one (presumed) student with obvious psychopathology. It is a shame his problems were not detected, but this is all too often the case with mental illness.

They are testing the gun to see if it's the murder weapon? Exactly what EVIDENCE did they arrest this guy on? He likes womens underwear and guns? It sounds to me like they haven't shown any evidence yet.

  1. The lack of expression when he was arraigned was so chilling. If he is convicted, that empty face tells all. Lack of empathy. Ted Bundy wore his arm in a sling so he could lure young coeds into his humble VW in order to brutually kill them, and he was college age. He had no feeling at all for what he was about to do. I should think someone innocent of such an awful crime would reach out and react. But that would be normal. So many bloggers here are trying to make "sense." Not going to happen in this case.

  1. 1. The pistol must be ID'd to the murder weapon. If not it's irrelevant to the case. 2. The panties must be positively identified as belonging to the victims. If not he simply collected panties. 3. The 3 surviving victims must positively identify him. 4. His fingerprints must be found at the crime scenes. Without one or more of these elements a prosecution will be very shaky indeed.

  1. I suggest they put him in an dark interview room with a mirror that is actually see-through from the other side where more cops/detectives are quietly debating about whether they have enough evidence. Then a detective perhaps female or junior, should ask him questions about his whereabouts on the night(s) in question. Maybe offer him a cigarette and see if his hand shakes when he reached for the pack.....? Or a drink of water that he may sip nervously and maybe spill on the desk? And then maybe get one of the senior detectives to yell at him suddenly, disclosing the evidence that the cops may or may not have, no-one can handle that sort of pressure, He'll crack for sure and admit guilt.

Or better still open the case to a whole bunch of folks on the internet, who collectively could piece together information they've read in the press. They could all put each other down etc weeding out the idiots, so only the smartest of internet folk will be left to solve the crime!

  1. I don't know if the dude's guilty or innocent. It sure sounds like he did it. What's more troubling to me, though, is how people take what's reported by the media as fact, even after time and time again we've seen they're human. I remember the olympic bomber in Atlanta...the media, cops, etc got that wrong too, and he sure "looked" guilty. Same with that poor schmuck in Florida who was accused of murdering those college kids, only to find out it was actually Danny Rolling.

Really, he's probably guilty. But the moral certainty many of you speak with based only on reading some media reports is disturbing, and doesn't speak highly of you.

If anyone cared to actually read the article beyond the headline you see it says he kept underwear from two of the victims but then goes on to say Police don't know which victims underwear he had. So my question is how do they know it belonged to a victim if they don't know who they belonged to. Do only victims of crime wear this type of underwear? Look at the destruction of this guys life so far. Pictures of his fiancee & from his yearbook. What happens if he isn't the right guy? Will anyone help him get his life back? The Answer is NO.
Doesn't he deserve a fair trial to be certain? So many of you overlooked a simple detail. I hope you never called called to Jury duty. You would probably choose execute someone so you can get home by 5.

  1. UNDERWEAR! You people and the underwear! Back in ancient history before polymerase chain reaction DNA testing (circa 1992), the only way this underwear would be identified is by the robbed women saying, "He took my underwear. It is size 6 and pink silk and from Victoria's Secret." Okay, then the police go search the possible perpetrator's house and then if they find such underwear located there, they ask the victim, "Is this it?" Okay? So, today, DNA PCR may or may not be possible on this evidence, but even without it, a visual ID will be adequate. //

ALSO, a visual ID is usually adequate to convict a person, and there is a series of clear, good photos -- both facial and full body, following a man from the hotel room, down an escalator, outside, through a mall, down the street, etc. //

We are NOT A JURY. If we were on a jury, we would be able to weigh the evidence. We have the right to be happy with the police work in this case, to think it is pretty good, and to feel confident they got their man. Okay? I am proud that the police did their jobs. When the police do something all wrong we protest that. SO when they do something right, we should appreciate and praise. And there is no comparison here to the Duke Lacrosse Team situation, which was obviously faked up from day one.

Markoff still gets his two years or more of pretrial motions followed by his lengthy trial with an unbiased jury. Maybe he even gets a mental health defense of some sort. His lawyer is ALREADY doing a good job -- he got Phil Markoff into court wearing normal-looking clothes, and with cuffs and chains that were not all that noticeable. Maybe lawyer can eventually even get him out on some very high bond while he awaits trial, especially if Markoff gets under medical care. Who knows? Even if he IS gulity, that does not mean he cannot get out of it with a good defense. Get real, people. It's not that there isn't evidence, it is that you want the evidence to go away -- and that is what a good defense team does. SO get to work.

  1. If the Rhode Island case does not stick, then Markoff should be found not guilty of the crime alleged in Boston, because although there could be multiple Craigslist killers within a short timeframe in the area, it would be likely that the real Craigslist killer is still at large. Also, it is logical that prostitutes have more than one client. Markoff could have been there and left his prints and claim he is embarassed about his sexual problems and argue that the victim must have been killed by one of her subsequent appointments.
