The Quincy apartment building where Markoff lived -- and where police allegedly found incriminating evidence.

By Maria Cramer, Globe Staff

A preliminary match has been made between the semi-automatic handgun found in Philip Markoff's apartment and the weapon used to kill Julissa Brisman at the Boston Marriott Copley Place last week, several law enforcement officials have told the Globe.

The officials also said that police had developed incriminating fingerprint evidence against Markoff.

The gun was found earlier this week during a search of Markoff's Quincy apartment, in a hollowed-out copy of the medical textbook "Gray's Anatomy," law enforcement officials said in today's Globe.

Markoff allegedly killed Brisman, 25, a masseuse from New York, on April 14, bashing her head and shooting her three times, including a fatal shot to the heart. Four days earlier, he had allegedly terrorized and robbed a prostitute at gunpoint. Authorities say both women had used Craigslist to advertise their services. Both crimes took place in posh Boston hotels.

Fingerprints matching Markoff's were found on the plastic restraints and duct tape left at a crime scene, the officials also said, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case publicly. It wasn't clear which scene they were referring to.

John Salsberg, Markoff's attorney, reached by cell phone this evening, said, "I really have no comment to make about that."

The development comes as two other law enforcement officials confirmed the 23-year-old defendant had been placed on suicide watch at the Nashua Street Jail.

Markoff, the Boston University medical student who has been dubbed the "Craigslist killer," was examined by medical staff at the jail and placed in a special cell with a camera trained on him after a correction officer saw marks on his neck that suggested he had tried to use shoelaces to hang himself, according to one of the officials. The officials requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case.

Markoff has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge in Brisman's death and not guilty to charges of armed robbery and kidnapping in the April 10 attack at the Westin Copley Place.

Rhode Island authorities are also investigating whether he attacked a prostitute there on April 16.

Donovan Slack of the Globe staff contributed to this report.

  1. This kid is a dope. He should have watched Forensic Files. I've been waiting for the fingerprints on the duct tape evidence to become public. They can even match the tear marks on the rolls. Wait until they get the DNA hairs and fiber samples from the panties collection.

No comment from the defense attorney? Wait until he sees all of the forensic evidence. I still maintain that the "suicide attempt" was staged by the defense in order to build an insanity plea.

  1. Markoff has been caught and cannot refute evidence that incrimnates him! He is either a phsycopathic liar or has more than one personality as this would not be unusual. It is better for his fiancee' to find out now then after marriage! She and the rest of the family just have to recognize they have a dual personality individual with pschycopathic problem!

  1. Man the police are really going all out here. They've planted the panties, the gun, the restraints. Now they've rigged the ballistic test of the gun to correspond with the weapon they planted in Gray's Anatomy. They even went as far as to place his fingerprints on some duct tape. What did this guy do...threaten Obama? Someone needs to stop this madness and go find the real killer.

  1. Okay, there is incriminating evidence in his apartment, but there still may be probable doubt about exactly WHO created the evidence. I'm not suggesting a police conspiracy, but it is possible that someone is incriminating Markoff. Someone envious of his success? Stranger things have happened. The justice system will hopefully ferret out the truth.

  1. He must have been really cocky to think he could get away with this. Its hard to believe anyone could be so careless. A witness testified that he was her attacker, and there is a ton of hard evidence linking him to the scene - if this was a setup it was pretty elaborate!

  1. This is getting rediculous. First the librul Globe reported that Markoff was a member of the Young Republicans while he was at SUNY, now because he owns a semi automatic handgun similar to the one that was used to kill a model/masseuse, there's a connection? This has turned into a media witch hunt.
All the libruls are going to be embarassed when it turns out that Phil Markoff was just a gun loving American, who got caught up in the Globes sensational fear mongering. For shame.

  1. The evidence that they have collected so far will be enough to prove IF he is guilty or not. IF he is guilty, what the hell was he thinking? Who honestly would think you could get away with something like that? Checking into ritzy hotels to commit these types of crimes? How stupid can you get? If he was just trying to get money, he would have been better just robbing people's houses.

  1. They had to have allowed those facts to come out because they know they have the right guy, the evidence is mounting by the day. An eyewitness, crime scene fingerprints, "the" gun used hidden in his apartment, little surprise or questions by him when he gets pulled over without any prior communication from the police, and they tell him out of nowhere that he's accused of murder? So it's better that half the women in NE know that at least "this" predator is accounted for. The part I don't get, here's a reportedly bright college kid, studying to be a doctor, and he doesn't know an IP Address can be tracked, doesn't understand video, fingerprints, casino tracking through players cards, or that the one(s) that got away can identify him? Very strange.

Posted by Robert Fontaine April 23, 09 09:22 PM
  1. Why is the BPD putting the evidence into the papers? Shouldn't someone in the ranks or the DA's office be plugging these leaks? What happened to the departmental "no comment" until the evidence could be presented to the grand jury? At least trying this case in the press will save the need for the taxpayers to have to pay for the resources to take the case to trial in an actual courtroom.

  1. I'm tired of all these people copping an "insanity" plea. They need to make it less desirable: If you plead guilty by reason of insanity to something that would have gotten you life in prison, you should get life in a state hospital. No more trying to get out of punishment because you were "insane" at the time of the crime.

  1. It looks like the police are doing their best to try Markoff in the press. The danger in this is that Markoff will be able to claim that he can't get a fair trial since everyone everywhere has already been convinced of his guilt. I realize that cops are known for having high IQs, but surely they have a DA to advise them on such things.

  1. Shouldn't this information be left to the trial and not given out to the newspapers?

Well, that eliminates people who read newspapers from the jury..

Very good points Bruce and Zack. Yes, game might be over (and perhaps with good reason in this case), but there is still the issue of releasing this information to the pubic.... don't think for a minute that this is NOT done very deliberately and for a certain reason by the police/prosecutors. No one of good will and sound reason advocates letting a murderer, or any criminal, go free because of a 'technicality'..no, everyone should and needs to be held strictly accountable in a civil society....but people are supposed to be innocent until proved guilty, we shouldn't be 'tried in the press'...any one remember Willie Bennet? He was not a good citizen, but that doesn't mean he can be thrown back into jail because he was 'liked' by someone investigating a case, or disliked by police. Perhaps through some aspect of 'social evolution' in our free, capitalistic society, we Americans have lost a very fundamental freedom..it seems that when one finds themselves in court, we now have to 'prove our innocence'. And when will some one be strong enough to address the issue of the wrongfully convicted? By our own justice department estimates, out of our prison population of over 2,000,000....12 - 24 % are innocentnt. How did we get to this point..and who will be strong enough to do something about it?

  1. "Markoff allegedly killed Brisman, 25, a masseuse from New York"
what qualifies someone to be a masseuse? did she go to school for this? was she certified? she was so good at her craft that she was able to travel to other cities to help people?? This young lady did not deserve what happened. But PLEASE! Boston.com, stop calling her a masseuse. We all know what she was!! And we also know that if she did not choose this profession, she would not have invited this wacko into her life.

  1. I was almost appointed on a jury last year for the man, who was convicted, of murdering four Boston men ( young men) four years ago. You better believe, the WHOLE jury pool knew this story. They don't really care, as long as you can claim that you'll be impartial. These days, you would have to live in a cave to not get some kind of media coverage.
Whether or not the forensics were "planted", there's still video and eye witnesses.
Pure sociopath, I actually think that he wanted to get caught.

  1. His fiance should be thankful that he was caught in time. She was probably going to be his next victim (with him receiving a huge insurance payout of course). I'm wondering if he even is an actual medical student or if he has been lying about that the whole time. Seems to me that you cannot gain much knowledge from a "hollowed out" Gray's Anatomy book......

Posted by Ross April 23, 09 09:52 PM
  1. Tell me, how on earth do you hollow out a textbook?

Anyways, if Markoff really did try to commit suicide then he's obviously guilty.

  1. This man is being tried by newspaper. His lawyer will probably be granted a change of venue because it will be impossible to impanel an impartial jury. Very unprofessional police conduct in my opinion.

  1. I believe the suicide attempt was genuine. He knows he's caught and his life as he knew it is over. He knows the rest of his life will be in prison.

He doesn't seem to have tried to cover up much. It seems he was caught up in spree killing, and felt if he got out of the crime scene undetected, he would not get caught.

Posted by Jill April 23, 09 09:55 PM
  1. lots of questions. Why did he have a gun in a hollowed out medical book? Answer: when checking a person for weapons, do you riffle through his books? The device allows him to carry a gun through any casual search system. Why did he have possible "suicide" marks on his neck? Answer: he put them there. This guy is a medical student so he's no dummy. The suicide ploy is just that; a ploy to plant doubt about his guilt, or at the very least, to garner sympathy. He seems to be a criminally arrogant person who thinks of himself above the laws of "lesser beings.

  1. @Deeroc

Actually, Markoff is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. This forum is the court of public opinion, and the posters aren't jurors; people can posit whatever theories and opinions they want. The juror screening process exists precisely to weed out potential bias, and Markoff's family will be paying for some competent defense attorneys, I assure you, so spare us your trite admonition about the presumption of innocence.
    ---------------

It's game over for the defense. Markoff's lawyer will mount an insanity defense; it's his only feasible course of action, unless he advises his client to plead guilty and spare the state the expense of a trial.

  1. Oh please.

So long as the information reported is accurate, the trial *will* be fair.

I suspect what Markoff's "defenders" really object to has little to do with Constitutional rights.

Instead, "what" has everything do with their "right" to distort the information as presented -- to advance *their* interests to create reasonable doubt. Period.

  1. What's with all the stupid conspiracy theories? Markoff was caught using good old fashioned police work. As far as the police planting evidence...that's pretty far fetched and reaching...seriously, some people watch too much television. In terms of some person's allegations of jealousy of markoff's success...who on earth is jealous of a medical student let alone phil markoff? If the cops hadn't caught him you'd all be bitching that it was taking too long. When the cops do a great job you all still complain. Typical!

  1. This is over. There isn't going to be a trial because Markoff will plead out with an agreement for appropriate mental health care. Look for a change in plea to guilty and remand for psychiatric evaluation. Everything points to a Markoff having a severe case bipolar disorder or manic-depressive illness of pretty extreme severity. Markoff must pay for his crimes but he is also a person in need of highly qualified medical help.

Why did he have a gun hidden in a fake book????????? Along with female underware????? Fingerprints on the duct tape????EVERYTHING IS POINTING TO HIM! Unless the BPD is just attempting to make a statement?

  1. In reference to comment number 16, from Johnny...I believe the word you are looking for is liberal. And here's what you seem to be missing. The gun isn't just "similar"...they have done preliminary ballistic tests that show that his gun was used to kill the masseuse. Not to mention the prints on the restraints and duct tape. Oh and let's not forget the surveillance footaget as well as the IP address being traced back to his apartment. And the text messages between him and the victim. Or maybe you missed all of that in your efforts to declare this some sort of "witch hunt"??? Seriously. I wouldn't say it is so much the fault of the liberals as it is the fault of this kid who took someone else's life and deserves some serious punishment for it. Her life was taken from her. At least he gets to live the rest of his life-albeit in jail but I would think that is better than being murdered for defending youself, wouldn't you agree???

Too bad if he is convicted in the media. This is today. Sympathy for the criminal is a bunch of hooey! This poor girl did not deserve the death that was brought to her. In this economy everyone is trying to "make it". He crossed the line. And now he is on the other side and needs to stay there with all the other social miscreants.

  1. How can you begin to think the guy is innocent?! Seriously! Just because he is a med student with a great background doesn't make him exempt from committing crimes of this nature!

He was obviously leading a degenerate lifestyle. He was caught going to gamble with $1000 in his pocket. Now, I don't know about you or me, but most med students don't go around gambling their funds away. Especially this time of year when finals and studying are very important.

Cops setting him up? Are you joking me? This is merely a thing of fiction. Its people who want to believe he is innocent that are claiming this nonsense. The thing is these people are quick to jump the gun about his innocence, yet if it was their own sister/mother/daughter or friend then they would be ready with torches and pitchforks to roast the guy. Talk about hypocrites.

In situations you have to look at the plain facts. It is known by a lot of people that the guy was a creep. Women of his past have come out and said he was a creep/weirdo. One even came out and said he forced himself on her until another guy intervened to stop him and that is was obvious he had a gambling problem. Drugs and gambling lead to deviant behavior; plain and simple. The urge and addiction cause people to do things they otherwise wouldn't.

What probably happened was he tried to rob the poor girl and she wouldn't give it up. So he smacked and beat her around a little bit and realized she was going to report him OR he beat her so hard that he just put her out of her misery and didn't intend to kill her. He was after the money and a mistake happened. He wasn't thinking about getting caught, he just wanted the money.

The evidence is overwhelming. First off, why was he hiding guns in books? He obviously was on Craigslist talking to these women otherwise the police wouldn't have such a strong case. Its pretty easy to trace IP addresses with warrants, all you need to know is the IP, ISP provider, and date and time. Its clear he was in contact with them. So, there is more deviant behavior.

People don't go around framing people for the fun of it. It takes time, money, resources, and lots of people involved. Trust me, the people capable of such a thing aren't going to waste their time on someone like this guy. He is GUILTY.

Your lying to yourself if you think this guy is innocent.

If you think this guy is innocent, then I have more than a couple hundred thousand people locked up in jail for crimes they didn't commit... they were just set up by the cops. Where is your bleeding heart for them?

Posted by Steve Case April 23, 09 10:47 PM
  1. How does reporting the "facts" of the crime bias the jury? Once they have been empaneled they will be instructed to consider only the facts as presented during the trial. They will also be instructed not to read the papers or watch TV reports about the trial. I think that most jurors are capable of that. You mostly see bias when a large percentage of the jury pool identifies strongly with the perp or the victim. In that case, they are likely to ignore facts because they don't fit with their feelings about the perp. I don't think that this is likely in this case.

The leather laces couldn't be put back in so in effect the shoes were ruined. This was done so he wouldn't hang himself. What's with Ma. police with a suspected murderer that has even more reason to off himself that they don't take everything away from him?

LOL...yea, why call it what it is given the fact that the woman was shot 3 times.
There's no bias against the gun - it didn't pull it's own trigger 3 times.

As for those who keep beating this dead horse of questioning Markoff's intelligence & knowledge of IP addresses and other traceable actions - ADD IT UP FOLKS - clearly he wanted to be caught. Nothing else explains his risk taking behavior - all of it.. Get yet? He's clearly is not stupid but IS a broken sociopath pushing this to an inevitable conclusion.

  1. How was this kid smart enough to get into med school, and dumb enough to leave that much physical evidence???

  1. I love how everyone says, "this guy is a model citizen and becasue he is smart and good looking he couldnt have done it" BS Peeps...Question to the public....WHAT DOES A CRIMINAL LOOK LIKE??? We have all kinds of criminals that look like anybody...there are plenty of them in Washington, CEO's., ETC...but check this...alot of seriel killers are smart, normal looking people, living a normal life...until the lights go out ...then they become madmen....tada....

Here's on earth, if you're a med student, maybe with a scalpel.

So many of the rhetorical questions, theories, & worries about fair trials here are absurd.

Wingnuts & moonbats back to your caves! LOL...

  1. It sure looks like he is guilty, but it is very troubling that the DA has leaked all of this infor to the media. Isn't the Da bound be some ethical rules to not leak this info?

  1. This guy should go away for a long time just for ruining craigslist personals and erotic services for the rest of us. Now the only people crazy enough to post on there will REALLY be the dregs of society. It was bad enough already.

  1. This guy is summa cum laude, and in one of the top medical schools. Yet he does the job worse than an amateur with evidence scattered all over implicating him. Is there any wonder that the health care is going down the tubes along with rest of the country ?
    ===========================================

Maybe the country is going dosn the tubes becuase of idle illogical thinking like that above.

And being summa cum laude doesn't mean one is emotionally balanced or of high morals.

  1. Sad for his parents...so sad for his fiance. But glad the police have done such a great job and that he is in jail and can't hurt anyone else. Gambling is an addiction and he was desperate for money. I don't think it was his plan to murder anyone but thinks just spun out of control. He had a lot going for him, too bad. Mostly it is such a waste that a beautiful young woman had to die for nothing. I hope her family finds some comfort that her killer is caught.

  1. why do people think there will be a trial? there is no trial coming here. this kid will take a plea at the outside chance he won't spend the rest of his life in jail. tainting a jury or releasing evidence to the public at this stage does not matter. the DA will put something in front of this kid like 25 to life with eligibility for parole when he is still upright and he'll take it. or maybe the DA won't offer it, but his attorney will be begging for it when they see the preponderance of evidence against them.

  1. With the trail of evidence he supposedly left behind I expect the police to due their job and catch him. Does anybody know if he met his fiance on craigslist.

  1. I don't believe this. Something is definitively very wrong in all this and I think we all know that. All this info i the news, this is not by chance..
Also, a clever person. if he would have done it, he would know how to do it without leaving that much evidence.
    Somethings is wrong here..

  1. Here's a theory...

Let's say it was armed robbery gone horribly wrong that led to the murder. He's loathing himself and half-way wants to get caught. At the same time part of him wants to run - just a matter of time before the police catch up to him. So what he needs is money. That leads him to immediately repeat the same crime again and then schedule a trip to Foxwoods, hoping to turn $1,000 into enough to flee to a remote country.

  1. The HUGE wedding in just over two months and the soon to be bride never inroduced her future husband to her bridsmaids? None of them had ever met him. A huge lavish wedding, Vera Wamg gown, a website and registry for their gifts and no one knows who their friend is marrying?
He was probably angry about being pushed into HER lavish trap and felt unimportant.....he got attention in another way.

  1. Interesting comparison between the rush by Boston authorities to leak any tidbit of evidence to the press and the more ethical approach of the authorities in California involving allegations of homicide against a female Sunday School teacher. Some day a Judge with courage is going to toss out improperly released evidence . Hopefully the public will hold the prosecutors, police and press responsible if that should occur.

  1. Why is insanity the only defense? If I were his lawyer I would simply admit he did it but claim it was accidental. He tried to rob her at gunpoint without intending to kill her. She attacked him and was shot accidentally. Involuntary manslaughter. I would even say that he might have been doing them a favor by robbing them if he scared them into a new line of work. Last point, I don't believe he ever gave any thought to getting caught; He is a sociopath, possibly a psychopath. There is really no point in second guessing his thinking now is there, clearly he was not thinking rationally in any sense.

  1. It's amazing that this kind of violence evokes so many varied comments. I wonder what President Obama thinks about this guy and the cops and the news media. We could ask THE Dr. Phil about Dr. (to be, but not now) Phil Markoff. My hat is off to his fiance - she's standin' by her man. It must be very hard for her, but I think she'll come out of all of this mess a stronger woman. Don't take it to heart, honey, He just had a lot of people folled, including you. You just be yourself and evaluate this ordeal objectively. Your life is the important one at this point. Love and Reiki to you and your family.

  1. It is astounding how some people think because this guy WAS a medical student & a "clean-cut" guy, he couldn't possibly have committed such horrible crimes. "Clean-cut" guys are just as capable of evil as the "grubby" guys, take Scott Peterson, Ted Bundy (law student--noone could believe he was a murderer--ended up murdering dozens of innocent women), and many, many others. As far as this guy being "handsome", well, that is a matter of personal opinion...I don't think he is handsome at all! Just a kid from rich parents who has obviously been very spoiled & told how great he was, no matter what!

  1. The girlfriend should consider herself lucky as she could have been a future victim. Love is blind. Markoff, even though a medical student, actions were those of a petty criminal and when cornered, he killed.

  1. And we believe the boston police? There is so much crime and corruption there. I think they just want to get this case going even if someone is innocent(not saying he is or isn't..not my job to judge him). But we all know to well how that police department works, don't we? There's only a few people that no if he did it or not, God, himself and the victims. I don't trust that police department for a second. Planting evidence they have done that before in other cases.but it is very troubling that the DA has leaked all of this information to the media to score brownie points for themselves. and to add insult to injury, post on craigslist to ask if there are other victims out there.huh..You would think with all

the publicity this case has gotten from day one, that would be needed or warrented in this HIGH PROFILE CASE. That only tells me they don't have half of what they say they do it's all speculations...Get a grip BOSTON!

    hmmmm..

    Purely curious...

Nice police work...now let's get this over with and lock him up for good so the rest of the people involved can put this behind them and move on with their lives.....My thoughts go out to his family, friends and the victims of this horrific crime spree....

  1. Does anyone of you proclaiming this guys innocence understand the significance of an e-mail being sent to the victim from Mr. Markoffs ip address (that's his computer address) on the day of the murder ... on top of the finger prints, on top of the bullets matching his gun, on top of the ties and the duct tape, on top of the panties... oh, and that grainy video just HAPPENS to bear an uncanny resemblance... of course, that could be any white guy with blond hair... give me a break. No, it's not the media's sensationalism that is convicting Mr. Markoff before his trial... it's the freakin' evidence dummies!!! Speaking of which, you'd think he'd know better than to use his home computer to e-mail his future victim, then bring home the evidence (yikes!)... guess common sense isn't a pre-requisite to med school.
