A tractor-trailer crashed into and became stuck under a footbridge in Cambridge this afternoon while traveling on Memorial Drive, State Police said.

Carrying computers and computer parts, the truck hit the Magazine Street footbridge at about 2 p.m., said Sergeant Michael Popovics, a State Police spokesman.

At the time of the crash, police shut down the westbound side and detoured traffic off Memorial Drive. Eastbound traffic was not affected. By about 4 p.m., traffic was moving in both directions, and State Police expected to have the truck removed by 9 p.m., Popovics said.

  1. It's almost laughable that, for as long as I can remember in my 57 years, trucks have hit the underside of bridges on the 2 river roads on either side of the Charles River. One would think that after all these years, the DCR (formerly MDC), agents of the executive branch of the state, would find a way to weed out dyslexic truck drivers or those who learned English as a foreign language and who cannot or do not pay attention to the height-limit signs! How about bang-bars before the last exit before the low-height bridges? Duh. I'm sorry, this is kind of funny.

  1. Too many trucks are traveling on our parkways where they are prohibited by law. The Jamaicaway in Jp is seeing a marked increase of trucks and State police are taking a blind eye. You want to raise revenue? Then stop and ticket these offenders. It is a plight on our beautiful parkways . Where is the enforcement and better signage ???

  1. Did the police ask the driver why he couldn't read the 10,000 signs on all of the entrances to Memorial Drive that say "No Trucks"? Is he yet another person who thinks that the rules don't apply to him? That's becoming epidemic in this country. He and his employer should be fined $200,000 for this, because of all of the state resources and other people's time he wasted.

  1. I'd like to say Kudo's to the police on this one. Not knowing of the problem, I got on Memorial from Vassar in Cambridge around 3:45pm heading towards the Pike. Once I hit the wall of traffic and saw all the lights ahead, I called work and let them know I'd be late getting back into the satellite office. In less than 5 minutes I was right up there with the truck, and 5 minutes later I was on the Pike. I expected to be stuck waiting for traffic to move for at least 45 minutes, but they really kept things going.

Does anyone know why they closed off the bridge before the one the truck hit? We were all diverted off Memorial and then back on before the truck, and I couldn't tell why.
