Ex-coach convicted of stealing funds sentenced to home confinement
By Jenna Nierstedt, Globe Correspondent
A former Chelsea High School football coach convicted Thursday of stealing thousands of dollars from the team’s booster club to pay for personal expenses was sentenced today to 90 days of home confinement and ordered to repay what he stole, according to the Suffolk district attorney’s office.
Superior Court jurors had found James Atkins, 43, guilty of six larceny charges: five counts of larceny over $250 and one count of larceny by check. He was acquitted of one count of larceny over $250.
Atkins’s home confinement will begin July 1, during which time he will be monitored with a GPS tracking device. He will not be allowed to leave his home except for medical appointments or religious services that must be pre-approved by the probation department.
Following confinement, Atkins will serve five years of probation, during which time he is not allowed to hold an employment position where he would be required to manage funds for a person or organization. Atkins was further ordered to repay the team $12,900.
