A second person has died after an accident this morning on Route 128 South in Burlington, and a Bedford man has been charged with motor vehicle homicide for allegedly causing the crash, state police said in a statement.
Alberto Maza, 22, of Lawrence was pronounced dead at the scene of the 6:53 a.m. crash. This afternoon, Juan Condorie, 43, of Lawrence died at Boston Medical Center because of injuries suffered when he was ejected from the car.
Robert Carlo Jr., 29, is facing two counts of negligent motor vehicle homicide and leaving the scene of the crash, state police said.
Police said Carlo was driving a 2008 Ford pickup truck southbound when he failed to stay within his lane and swerved into the lane to his right, hitting a 1996 Ford Explorer driven by Jose M. Martinez, 29, of Woburn. The contact caused the Explorer to lose control, spin out to its left, and cross the highway, where it crashed into a 2008 Dodge Durango occupied by five men. Both the Explorer and Durango rolled over.
Maza and Condorie were among five Lawrence men in the Durango. The three others were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Martinez, the driver of the Explorer, sustained minor injures.
Carlo allegedly fled the scene. State police investigating the case later found Carlo's truck outside a Boston Sports Club in Lexington, and then found Carlo himself at a Friendly's restaurant in Bedford. Carlo is to be arraigned Tuesday in Woburn District Court.
Because of the crash, Route 128 southbound was closed off and on for more than two hours.
