Road closures for the week of May 17
Road closures and other transportation advisories for the week of May 17:
Memorial Day traffic advisory
State transportation officials are urging motorists to plan their travel to avoid peak traffic volumes during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.
Historically, the heaviest Memorial Day holiday traffic on Interstate 90 (the Massachusetts Turnpike) occurs on Thursday, Friday and Monday from about 1 to 7 p.m., especially at the Interstate 84 interchange, Exit 9, in Sturbridge. Traffic at Exit 9 has averaged 35,000 vehicles on the Friday before Memorial Day.
Traffic will also be heavy at Exit 11A (Interstate 495), which handles cars headed south to Cape Cod and north to New Hampshire and Maine. A Red Sox homestand will draw extra traffic on the turnpike's Boston Extension, and the Tanglewood Jazz Festival will bring extra volume at Exit 2 in Lee.
