Big savings seen for those using public transportation

Boston leads 20 other American cities in the amount that people can save if they take public transportation, according to a new survey.

In Boston, people can save $12,632 a year by taking the subway or bus instead of driving, the American Public Transportation Association said.

The association studied the 20 cities with the highest transit ridership in the nation, looking at the cost of parking and the price of gas in each city.

New York and San Francisco came in second and third, with people able to save $12,589 and $11,713, respectively, in those cities. At the bottom of the list: people in Las Vegas and Pittsburgh were able to save $8,184 and $7,724, respectively.

The association, which released the study Wednesday, is a nonprofit whose members include public transportation systems, state departments of transportation, businesses that work in the field, and academic institutions.
