2 people rescued from Merrimack River after boat capsizes
By Benjamin Paulin, Globe Correspondent
Two people were pulled from the mouth of the Merrimack River last night after their boat took on water and capsized.
The Coast Guard received a distress call at 8:42 p.m. after a good Samaritan witnessed the 20-foot recreational vessel in distress.
When the response crew arrived they saw the two people clinging to the hull of the boat and pulled them into a lifeboat.
Petty Officer James Rhodes said there were no injuries reported and the two individuals were in “good condition.” They were taken to the harbormaster, who then transported them to Salisbury Marina in Salisbury.
Rhodes said he did not know why the boat began to take on water but “any time there is less light and less visibility the potential danger can be increased.”
He also said that although the temperature in the air may be warming up but the water temperature is still “dangerously cold.”
“Don’t make the mistake that the water is warming up at the same pace as the weather,” he said.
