Duxbury boy injured in hit and run, police say
By Stewart Bishop Globe Correspondent
A 7-year-old Duxbury boy injured Saturday evening in Braintree was the victim of a hit and run, police said today.
The boy was playing in the front yard of a relative's home during a graduation party when he ran into the street to chase the ball. Braintree Deputy Chief Russell Jenkins said details of the accident are vague, but it appears the boy may have run into the side of the vehicle and slid underneath it as the rear wheels ran over him.
Braintree Deputy Chief Russell Jenkins said the boy told police the vehicle -- possibly a BMW -- was brand new and black, resembling a police car, but without the lights or markings.
The boy was taken to South Shore Hospital in Weymouth with a broken right leg and a fractured pelvis, after his father discovered him lying in the street crying.
Police say other young children at the residence saw the vehicle, and described the car as having a brown top. No adults witnessed the incident.
Jenkins said it's unclear whether the driver of the vehicle knew he had struck the child.
"It's entirely possible that the driver was unaware of the incident," he said. "The car would have experienced a small bump which could of gone unnoticed."
