Smith

In his stories for the newspaper and in the Worldly Boston blog he writes for Boston.com, Smith chronicles people from Greater Boston who are making an impact abroad, and people from other countries who are doing noteworthy things in the region. In honoring Smith in the category of newspapers with a circulation over 150,000, the association said today that his work "demonstrates that newspapers can bring readers an international perspective without leaving home.''

Among the stories recognized: how a Massachusetts AIDS specialist's trip to South Africa transformed his research, and New Englanders of Cape Verdean descent who have helped to nurture the country.

Smith, a Boston native who grew up in Newton, served as the Globe's foreign editor from 2002-2007 and as national political editor during the 2008 presidential campaign.

Before joining the Globe, he was a foreign correspondent, based in Buenos Aires and Mexico City for the Los Angeles Times, and in Johannesburg, Tokyo, and The Hague for The Associated Press.
