East Boston fire leaves 15 homeless

An unattended candle caused a three-alarm blaze that left 15 people homeless and caused $400,000 worth of damage to two buildings on Saratoga Street in East Boston this evening.
The fire started at 346 Saratoga around 5 p.m., according to Steve McDonald, a Boston Fire Department spokesman. The flames quickly spread across an alley to 344 Saratoga St., he said.
Firefighters had the blaze under control in about 20 minutes, McDonald said. A resident was taken to the hospital with burn wounds, and a firefighter was treated for a cut to his hand.
The injuries were not life-threatening, fire officials said.
