Chlorine leak forces evacuation of Kingston sports club
A Kingston sports club was evacuated this morning after 350 gallons of chlorine spilled from a tank supplying the club's outdoor pool.
The leak from the 500-gallon tank at the Kingsbury Club and Spa on Summer Street was reported at 10:40 a.m. by the lifeguard on duty, club manager David Gonick said.
Visitors to both the club and the Bog Ice Skating rink, which is next door to the club, were evacuated as a safety precaution, said Kingston Fire Captain Robert Heath.
The tank sits on the facility's pool deck, Heath said.
A state hazardous materials response team and teams from Carver, Duxbury, Halifax, Pembroke, and Plymouth were called in to help Kingston firefighters clean up the leaking tank, Heath said.
Officials said no one was injured and the facility will be closed for the rest of the day. "It's going to be a big clean-up and might take awhile," Heath said.
