In shooting's wake, Dorchester restaurant's hours curtailed
Ten days after a fight at Ka-Carlos in Dorchester left the restaurant’s chef and a patron shot to death, the Boston Licensing Board today voted to cut the hours the Uphams Corner nightspot can stay open.
The commissioners voted to require Ka-Carlos to close at 11:30 p.m., an hour and a half earlier than it had been allowed to serve customers.
Daniel Pokaski, the chairman of the Licensing Board, said the move reflects the board’s concern about the violence.
The owner of Ka-Carlos did not return calls.
On Tuesday, Emmanuel DePina, 26, of Dorchester was arraigned in Dorchester Municipal Court on charges he used a .45-caliber handgun on Aug. 2 to kill Manuel Monteiro, the 47-year-old chef, and Jovany "JoJo" Eason, a 20-year-old Dorchester man. Monteiro was apparently trying to break up a fight between DePina and Eason.
