Off-duty corrections officer hit, killed by postal service truck
An off-duty Norfolk County corrections officer was killed while jogging in his hometown of Weymouth today after he was struck by a United States Postal Service vehicle, police said.
James Zupkofska was jogging at about 6:20 p.m.on Summer Street when he was hit.
He was taken to South Shore Hospital where he later died, said Weymouth Police Lieutenant Richard C. Grimes.
The driver of the truck was not seriously injured, Grimes said. Police are investigating.
Zupkofska, who collegues said was in his mid-40s, had worked at the Norfolk County Correctional Center for the past five years. Norfolk Sheriff Michael G. Bellotti expressed sadness at the news.
“He had the respect of the entire staff,” Bellotti said in a statement Saturday night. “He was a stellar officer.”
