Pedestrian struck and killed on Route 128 in Woburn
A 77-year-old Winchester man was struck and killed by a Mack truck early this morning in the right lane of Route 128 South in Woburn, according to a statement from State Police.
John F. Herlihy stepped into the roadway and was struck at 5:38 a.m. near Route 38. He suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:47 a.m.
It was not immediately clear why Herlihy was in the roadway, but State Police said he was not changing a tire, a detail reported by some media outlets.
Police closed the southbound lanes for 2 1/2 hours after the crash, reopening the lanes at 8:20 a.m.
The 2003 Mack tractor-trailer was driven by Moses K. Yahaya, 57, of Jersey City, N.J. Yahaya was not injured, State Police said.
The crash remains under investigation.
