Woman gets foot stuck between Red Line train and platform
A woman who was stepping out of a subway train got her foot stuck between the train and the station platform in a harrowing incident at the Red Line's Park Street station this morning.
The Boston Fire Department responded to the accident at about 11:15 a.m, and rescuers were able to extricate the woman’s foot in about 15 minutes using airbags that are able to move large objects, according to department spokesman Steve MacDonald. The train did not move after the woman’s foot fell into the open space.
The woman was taken to Tufts Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Joe Pesaturo, spokesman for the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority. Red Line service was delayed for 22 minutes due to the accident.
MacDonald said the space between the train and the platform was only a few inches wide.
Pesaturo said this type of accident is extremely rare.
“This is kind of a freak accident. I cannot recall this ever happening the past,” MacDonald said.
