Man to be arraigned in Fairhaven kidnapping
A man accused of kidnapping a woman at a Stop & Shop in Fairhaven was arrested this morning in Attleboro, police said.
Eugene Fernandes, 45, is scheduled to be arraigned today in Attleboro District Court on charges of kidnapping, assault with a dangerous weapon, armed robbery, breaking and entering into a motor vehicle, threats to commit crime, and destruction of property. The Wareham resident has a lengthy criminal history.
On Oct. 15, Fernandes allegedly broke into a 43-year-old woman's car in the Stop & Shop parking lot and forced her to drive her around for 30 minutes. Fernandes suggested that he was armed during the ride, police said.
At one point, Fernandes forced the vehicle into park and took the victim's ignition key and cell phone. The victim was able to snatch her phone and escape the car, which is when Fernandes fled, police said.
Fairhaven Police Chief Michael Myers said today that officers located Fernandes in Attleboro, where he was arrested today at 10 a.m.
