EAST BRIDGEWATER -- A man used the threat of a suspicious package to rob a bank this morning in East Bridgewater.

The State Police bomb squad responded to the East Bridgewater Savings Bank at 29 Bedford St. and used a robot to inspect the package, which does to appear to have been dangerous.

The hubbub shut down the center of town as an abundance of emergency vehicles responded to the scene. Police evacuated the bank and closed nearby roads, including the three-way intersection of Bedford and Central streets and Maple Avenue.

The man entered the bank just before 10 a.m., passed a note to a teller, and left behind the package, police told reporters at the scene. Authorities would not describe what the note said.
