Three family members charged after alleged kidnapping, standoff
A Swansea father, his 21-year-old son, and his 19-year-old daughter are facing a variety of charges after the children allegedly kidnapped a man and the father and son scuffled with officers investigating the abduction, police said
Anthony Andreozzi and his sister, Gina, allegedly kidnapped a man in Bristol, R.I., threatening him with a gun and demanding money he allegedly owed them, said Swansea Police Deputy Chief Robert Furtado.
The brother and sister took the victim to his apartment in Swansea, which is around the corner from the home where the Andreozzis live.
Gina Andreozzi attempted to break into the victim's apartment, while Anthony Andreozzi allegedly held him captive in a car. The victim was screaming, which alerted neighbors to call the police.
When police arrived shortly before 11 p.m., the car was found at the Andreozzi home at 434 Old Providence Road.
"When the police showed up, there were four people standing outside of the car," Furtado said. One person ran away and has not been found. Three others, including the victim, went into the house, he said.
When police approached the home, the victim ran outside. Mario Andreozzi, 56, father of Gina and Anthony, followed, shouting racial slurs at the victim, who is black, and carrying a shotgun, police said.
"He [Andreozzi] refused to drop the weapon after we told him to," Furtado said. "He threw the gun to a bench on the front porch, and there was a struggle to retrieve the gun" between Mario, Anthony, and an officer.
Anthony eventually retrieved it and ran back inside the home, while Mario fought with officers, Furtado said.
"Mario was attempting to assault officers by swinging his fists," Furtado said. "We had to tase him, and we put him under arrest."
With a Massachusetts State Police SWAT team on scene, the people inside the home -- Gina, Anthony, and Gina's 2-year-old child -- were taken outside safely after a two-hour armed standoff.
Furtado said a search of the home uncovered shotguns and at least four handguns.
The Andreozzis are to be arraigned in Fall River District Court today. They face a variety of charges, including assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, and kidnapping. Mario is also charged with a civil rights violation for the racist remarks he allegedly made to the victim.
