Halifax man faces charges in Plympton hit and run

December 23, 2009 11:03 AM

A Halifax man who police believe struck a Plympton woman with his snowplow and then drove away will appear today in Plymouth District Court to face a criminal citation, police said.

Plympton Police Chief Matthew Clancy said Robert Savastano, 61, was taken to the police station for questioning late Tuesday night concerning Monday night's hit and run accident that left Mary Burke, 47, of Plympton in the hospital with serious injuries.

Clancy said investigators, working on "multiple tips," went to Savastano's home and executed a warrant and found a vehicle with damage that was consistent with descriptions of the snowplow.

At his home, Clancy said, Savastano initially gave no explanation for the damage to his snowplow but agreed to go to the station to be interviewed.

"He acknowledged seeing some of the press coverage the past 24 hours but kept denying involvement," Clancy said.

Later, during the interview, Clancy said, Savastano admitted he was driving on Main Street near Pleasant Street when he knew he hit something and continued driving on.

"He said he was aware afterwards [from news reports] that a pedestrian was struck and didn't make himself known [to police]," Clancy said.

Burke was struck at 6 p.m. walking along Pleasant Street. Just minutes before being struck, Burke stopped at Competition Auto Body to use a phone. Owner Chuck Randolph let her use the phone, and said she was very thankful.

"She said three times, 'God's gonna bless you for letting me use your phone,'" Randolph said. Minutes later, he heard a crash, and thinking someone had crashed into a car on his lot, he ran outside.

Recognizing one of the gloves that Burke had been wearing lying in the street, Randolph said, "I saw that glove, and my heart dropped."

Clancy thanked the public for all the tips that were given to police. Several people came to the station to offer assistance, Clancy said.

"We were very gratified by the volume of tips and interest that we received in this case," Clancy said.

Clancy said Savastano will face charges that include a charge of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident after knowingly causing personal injury.
