Five injured by escalator at starlet's mall appearance
A malfunctioning escalator injured five people today during a mall appearance by Disney Channel starlet Selena Gomez, North Attleborough Police said.
North Attleborough police and firefighters arrived at the Emerald Square Mall shortly after 4 p.m. when an escalator stopped short, flinging some people backwards.
Five people were treated for minor injuries, three of who were transported to Sturdy Memorial Hospital, Fire Lieutenant Jeffery Badger said.
The incident took place during a question and answer session by Selena Gomez, star of Disney Channel series “Wizards of Waverly Place,” and singer for Selena Gomez & The Scene.
While a thorough investigation of the cause of the escalator defect will be conducted Tuesday, overcrowding is a possible cause, Badger said.
