Gov. Patrick the 1,295th-highest earner in state government
He has a fancy title and plenty of power, but Governor Deval Patrick is far from the highest-paid person in state government.
With a salary of $136,000, Patrick is out-earned by 1,294 other state employees, according to a payroll database released by the state.
Officials and academics at the University of Massachusetts accounted for the vast majority of the top 100 earners, led by Donna Ambrosino, who is executive director of the Massachusetts Biologic Laboratories, who earned $649,324 in 2009.
The labs develop and make vaccines and other products, primarily for the state to distribute in a program to immunize children, according to its website. They also translate research ideas into vaccines and other products for commercialization and distribution nationwide.
The second-highest earner was Terence Flotte, executive deputy chancellor, provost and dean of the UMass Medical School, who pulled down $623,594. The third-highest: Michael F. Collins, chancellor of the medical school and senior vice president for the health sciences, who made $608,674.
Thirty-four people made more than $300,000 in the state jobs, with 33 of them working at the university, including UMass basketball coach Derek Kellogg, whose pay was seventh highest at $487,005, and UMass President Jack M. Wilson, who came in 13th, making $414,855.
The database included 105,293 full-time, part-time, temporary, and contract employees from the executive, legislative, and judicial branches.
