A Level 3 sex offender has been sentenced to 20 to 25 years in prison for attempting to rape a woman jogging on scenic Plum Island in September.
Scott Gagnon, 51, of Tewksbury pleaded guilty today in Salem Superior Court and was sentenced by Judge John Lu, the Essex district attorney's office said.
Prosecutors said Gagnon attacked the woman on Sept. 28. Despite being brought to the ground, the woman fought Gagnon off and escaped. He was arrested a short time later in a parking lot on Plum Island, prosecutors said in a statement.
Gagnon had been released in 2007 after spending 27 years in Bridgewater State Hospital for several rapes, prosecutors said.
