A bulldog was shot to death by police after it attacked a woman and a 5-year-old boy in Lakeville Wednesday, sending both to the hospital, police said.
The Lakeville Police Department said in a statement that officers responded to 4 Helen St. at about 4:18 p.m., where Karen Bruno O'Leary, 38, was being attacked by her 1-year-old American Bulldog.
A 5-year-old boy, who O'Leary was baby-sitting, had been attacked before police arrived, the statement said.
The dog was separated from O'Leary and shot three times after it lunged at an officer, police said, and the animal later "began to turn its attention to the personnel working on the woman."
The dog was shot six more times and died, according to the statement.
The boy, who was not identified, was taken by MedFlight to Children's Hospital Boston with severe facial injuries, police said.
O'Leary was flown to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center with serious injuries to her arm. A Beth Israel spokeswoman said O'Leary was in good condition Wednesday night.
No prior incidents involving the dog had been reported to police, the statement said.
