A 31-year-old Lowell man is facing first-degree murder charges for allegedly stabbing to death two women in a drug dispute in that city Friday night.

Edwin Nunez was arrested last night at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington and is to be arraigned this afternoon in his hospital bed, Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone said at a news conference.

Nunez allegedly killed Debra Souza, 47, and Keyla Michelle Betancourt, 30, both of Lowell.

Lowell police and emergency responders found the women when they raced to 342 Westford St. for a report of a stabbing at 3:48 p.m Friday. Both the women were taken to the hospital, where they later died, prosecutors have said.

Souza lived at the Westford Street apartment. Betancourt lived in the area.
