Matthew Amorello, the former chairman of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority, is set to appear in an Haverhill courtroom Tuesday, more than two weeks after his arrest on drunk driving charges.
Amorello was arrested early Aug. 7 after he allegedly smashed into two parked cars and tried to continue to drive his SUV even though one wheel had literally fallen off the vehicle, according to Haverhill police report. His arrest triggered shock and compassion after booking photos taken by Haverhill police were widely circulated.
Amorello, 52, did not make his original arraignment date of Aug. 9 and his Boston attorney, William T. Hogan III, has said in court that his client was hospitalized at the UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester for undisclosed reasons.
Today, Hogan said in a brief statement that Amorello is expected to be in Haverhill Tuesday. Hogan said no comment will be made until after Amorello appears before a judge.
Amorello stepped down under pressure as Turnpike chairman in 2006 after a woman was killed in the collapse of a section of a Big Dig tunnel.
