EPA sues Revere over alleged sewage discharges
The US Environmental Protection Agency is suing the city of Revere for its alleged discharge of sewage into local waters.
In a federal complaint filed today, the EPA said the city has discharged pollutants into nearby waters at least 123 times since January 2000, in violation of its permit for the release of storm water.
The discharges usually occur when a manhole overflows, the complaint said, and the run-off spills into a street drain that sends it into local waters including Mill Creek, Chelsea Creek, and the Pines River.
The suit also alleges that city officials failed to notify the EPA of manhole and pump station overflows at least 13 times between 2006 and 2008.
The EPA is seeking fines of up to $27,500 per day per violation that occurred before March 15, 2004, $32,500 per day per violation that occurred between that date and Jan. 12, 2009, and $37,500 per day per violation that occurred after that date, the complaint said.
