A Holyoke man was seriously injured early this morning after he was struck by a sports utility vehicle while standing next to a State Police cruiser, according to State Police.
The police officer had pulled over to the breakdown lane of Route 391 northbound near exit 4 in Chicopee to help the man attend to a flat tire. The officer was still in his cruiser and the man, whose name was not released, was standing by the officer's window at about 2:26 a.m. when the vehicle swerved into the lane, hitting the man and the cruiser.
The driver of the vehicle, described as light-colored, then drove away, said State Police.
The man was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield with serious injuries. The trooper, whose name was also not released, was not injured.
State Police are investigating the crash and were still looking for the driver of the sport utility vehicle.
