Shooting suspect held on $200,000 bail in case sparked by argument over woman
Hours after a shooting shocked a Dorchester neighborhood, Boston police arrested the man they allege is responsible for undermining the peace on a street where residents have fought hard for the past five years to get rid of violent crime.
Kamal Oliver, 27, was ordered held on $200,000 cash bail in Dorchester Municipal Court today after pleading not guilty to armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm, according to Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley's office.
The victim, identified by neighbors as Edward Toney, was taken to Boston Medical Center for treatment of multiple gunshot wounds and was in stable condition today.
Seeking to calm residents' fears that the turbulence of the past has returned, police stressed today that the shooting of the 43-year-old victim was not a random act.
"This was a personal dispute over a female,'' police spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll said. She added that both the alleged shooter and the victim knew each other.
The Globe reported today how Monday night's shooting upset residents. In 2005, residents referred to parts of Lyndhurst Street, where the latest shooting occurred, as a “hell zone,’’ with drug crimes and violence running out of control, the Globe reported today.
