One dead, three wounded in Lawrence restaurant shooting spree
LAWRENCE - A man in his early 20s was shot to death at a Lawrence restaurant early this morning and three other people were wounded following a dispute, police said. Two suspects are under arrest.
Lawrence Police Chief John Romero said officers responded to a call for shots fired at La Guira Restaurant, which he described as a "restaurant, bar, club" at about 12:45 a.m. and saw people pouring out of the club when they arrived.
Officers found three shooting victims, including the man who was killed. Romero would not identify the man but said he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other victims, a man and a woman who also were not identified, were flown to Boston hospitals. They are in serious condition today, Romero said.
He said a fourth victim, a waitress at the club who was shot in the leg, was driven to Lawrence General Hospital by non-rescue personnel and is expected to survive.
Romero said officers at the scene observed a vehicle fleeing at a high rate of speed and pursued it into Lowell.
He said the two occupants eventually drove off the road and abandoned the vehicle.
The men, identified as Fernando Guerrero, 27, and Johan Saint Clair, 30, both of Lawrence, were apprehended in Lowell with the help of Lowell and State Police and were charged with murder, Romero said.
He said the investigation is active and more charges could be brought.
It remains unclear what prompted the shooting, according to Romero.
He said witnesses told police that only one gun was used but that has not been confirmed.
Romero said he could not confirm that a birthday party was going on at the time of the shooting, though he did see a cake inside the premises.
Workers were mopping inside the club this morning and debris including broken glass could be seen outside the doors, as well as what appeared to be blood by the main entrance.
Romero said this morning's killing was the city's fourth homicide this year in a community that usually averages about four in an entire year. There were nine homicides last year, he said.
He added that lthe shooting spree was the first quadruple shooting he has seen in his 12 years as chief.
He said the city regularly has problems with clubs that stay open late at night.
"Some clubs operate under the rules, some don't," he said, adding that La Guira has a license to stay open until 1 a.m.
