The weather was already warming up in May when Cynthia Dale frolicked in the Christian Science Monitor fountain.

The cold, hard numbers are confirming what many a sweaty Bay State resident already knew about this summer: It was really hot.

The National Weather Service, which has kept records since 1872, says it was the third warmest summer on record measured at Logan International Airport, with an average temperature of 73.6. The warmest summer was 1949, when temperatures averaged 74.9.

At the Blue Hills Observatory in Milton, where records have been kept since 1885, this summer was the warmest ever with an average temperature of 71.3, surpassing the 1949 record of 70.8.

In Boston, there were 25 days of 90-degree-plus highs, 11 more than usual, the Weather Service said Tuesday in a statement.

At Blue Hills, there were 21 days of 90-degree-plus highs, 14 more than usual, the forecasters said.

The forecasters said high pressure prevailed along the Eastern seaboard during much of meteorological summer, which is defined as the months June, July, and August.

While the state saw plenty of sunshine and several heat waves, precipitation totals turned out nearly normal due to a high number of thunderstorms, weak fronts in June and July, and a four-day nor'easter from Aug. 22 to Aug. 25, forecasters said.
