Cambridge City Council must revisit zoning rules on signs, group says
A Cambridge coalition opposed to a zoning amendment that they say could lead to a skyline overrun with illuminated business signs has collected enough signatures on a petition to force the City Council to reconsider its passage, the coalition announced today.
The Save Our Skyline coalition delivered the signatures of 15,581 of registered voters in Cambridge – about double what is required by state law – this morning to the city’s election commission, according to the coalition.
“Clearly, city officials underestimated the passion that Cambridge residents have for their city,” said Karen Schwartzman, spokeswoman for the coalition, said in a statement.
She added, “An amendment that was introduced as ‘simple housekeeping’ is now understood to have broad implications for the vistas of Cambridge, particularly along the Charles River, and the public has taken notice.”
The Cambridge City Council approved the change, which streamlines the process for businesses to place signs on tall buildings, 6-to-3 last month. Under the new rules, signs cannot exceed 90 square feet on buildings more than 100 feet tall.
The amendment will now be reconsidered by the City Council, and if councilors do not rescind the change, it will put to question on a ballot in 2011.
