Deadline to register to vote is Wednesday
With the election only three weeks away, the Massachusetts secretary of state is reminding voters today that the deadline to register to vote is Wednesday.
Local election offices will be open for voter registration until 8 p.m. Wednesday, and commuters who wish to register can do so at North Station during rush hour until 8 p.m. that day, Secretary William F. Galvin's office said in a statement.
People who are US citizens, residents of Massachusetts, and at least 18 on or before Election Day, Nov. 2, are eligible to register, said the statement. Anyone who has moved must re-register to vote at their new address.
In addition to governor and lieutenant governor, residents will vote for the state's constitutional officers, state lawmakers, district attorneys, and sheriffs. Voters will also cast ballots in congressional races. In some areas, county commissioners or charter commissioners will be on the ballot.
Voters will also say yea or nay on three ballot questions. Question 1 would repeal the sales tax on alcohol, Question 2 would repeal the state affordable housing law, and Question 3 would roll the sales tax on all items back to 3 percent.
Galvin is urging residents who are unsure of their registration status to check with their city or town clerks or registrars of voters before the deadline. For more information, go to www.sec.state.ma.us/ele or call the Registration hotline at 1-800-462-VOTE.
