In new campaign ad, Patrick takes aim at Baker's record as health care exec
Governor Deval Patrick, who has promised not to run negative ads, released a hard-hitting new television spot today that attacks his Republican rival’s record as president and chief executive of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care.
The new ad accuses Republican challenger Charles D. Baker of raising premiums at Harvard Pilgrim by 150 percent, costing the average family $3,109 a year, while tripling his salary, to $1.7 million. The ad also highlights Patrick’s decision this year to cap some premium increases sought by health insurance companies.
Patrick’s campaign called the new spot a “comparative advertisement" about Baker's tenure as chief executive from 1999 to 2009.
"This difference on health care provides a clear contrast in values between Charles Baker and Governor Patrick," the campaign said in a statement on its website.
Patrick is locked in a close race with Baker as the Nov. 2 election looms less than four weeks away. Independent Timothy Cahill and Green-Rainbow Party candidate Jill Stein are also running.
