Dozens arrested for drunken driving in Mass. and N.H. over Thanksgiving holiday
Dozens of drivers were arrested in Massachusetts and New Hampshire for driving allegedly drunk or under the influence of drugs over the long Thanksgiving weekend, police said.
State troopers patrolling Massachusetts roadways arrested 75 allegedly impaired drivers between Thursday and Sunday. Of those, 71 were allegedly drunk and four were believed to be driving under the influence of narcotics, State Police said in a statement.
To the north, New Hampshire State Police arrested 33 people for driving while intoxicated. Under a weekend program called “Operation Care,” 3,519 cars were stopped, nearly 1,000 were cited for speeding, and dozens more were cited for other violations.
“The Department of Safety will continue to operate similar holiday and weekend traffic enforcement efforts to promote and emphasize the importance of highway safety,” said New Hampshire Safety Commissioner John Barthelmes, in a statement.
Of the 75 Massachusetts drunken driving arrests, 18 were made at one of two sobriety checkpoints at Gallivan Boulevard in Dorchester and Route 1 in Peabody.
The numbers were virtually the same as they were last year, when 76 impaired drivers were arrested in Massachusetts roads.
