SJC website shut down apparently due to failure to renew domain name

A key Supreme Judicial Court website is shut down this morning, apparently because someone forgot to renew the domain name.

The site, massreports.com, provides the public with online copies of opinions from both the Supreme Judicial Court and the Appeals Court without having to subscribe to a costly legal reporting service.

The site is run by the state and West legal publishing, said C. Clifford Allen, who heads the SJC's Reporter of Decisions office. Allen said he noticed this morning that his website was gone and that a notice -- "massreports.com expired on 11/08/2010 and is pending renewal or deletion" – now appears at the Web address.

Allen said he has alerted the state's IT department, but is not certain why the site is shuttered.

"If they did send a (renewal) notice, it must have been caught in the spam filter,'' he said. "We are dealing with it as we speak.''

Allen said the site gets 750,000 hits per year and that 7,000 people subscribe to a daily e-mail with links to the opinions of that day.
