Study finds Mass. drivers have lower gas costs
An environmental group says Massachusetts is one of the least vulnerable states in the nation to oil price changes.
The Washington-based Natural Resources Defense Council, in a report released Thursday, looked at total gas costs and compared them with people's incomes in the 50 states.
Massachusetts came out 48th, with average spending of $1,310.05 on gas in 2009 accounting for just 2.63 percent of typical income. Connecticut and New York were 49th and 50th.
At the other end of the scale were Mississippi and Montana, where gas costs accounted for more than 6.35 percent and 6.08 percent of income, respectively.
Elizabeth Hogan, a senior research analyst at David Gardiner & Associates, which prepared the report for the council, said one reason the Northeast states do well in the rankings is that people here have higher average incomes. At the same time, she said, residents of the Northeast can spend less money on gas by using public transportation, an option not as readily available in other states.
